The Eagles fall to 0-2-0 on the season with the 3-0 loss
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team continued its season-opening five-game road trip with a clash with the Butler University Bulldogs under the lights at the Butler Bowl on Monday night, Aug. 24. Unable to overcome 2-nil deficit at the half, the Eagles fell to the Bulldogs, 3-0.
A physical match from the start, the Eagles and Bulldogs sat scoreless through the opening 20 minutes without any solid scoring chances. Things changed in the 22nd minute when EMU earned a throw in deep in Butler's defensive half. Stepping to the sideline, senior Julia Lombardi sent a long throw into the box where junior Madison Hirsch collided with a pair of Bulldogs. With the goalkeeper scurrying back to her post, senior Megan Trapp settled the loose ball and fired off a shot. Trapp's shot was blocked by a Butler defender leaving a bouncing ball just outside the box where senior Chelsie Odden possessed it. Working for a sliver of an opening, Odden blasted a shot off the near post, keeping the game scoreless.
On the counter, the Bulldogs moved up field. Switching fields, Butler's Serina Kashimoto controlled on the wing and sent a cross from 25 yards out. Benefiting from a strong breeze, the attempted cross tucked inside the upper left of the goal to give Butler the early 1-0 edge.
EMU created another opportunity in the 30th minute when junior Ellie Tillar worked her defender on top of the box. Making a quick step, Tillar spun around her mark and sent a shot into the arms of Butler's keeper.
With commotion in the box after a throw-in, a Butler forward slipped past the backline and sent a bouncing header into the back of the net sending the Eagles to halftime trailing 2-0.
Pressing, the Eagles created plenty of scoring opportunities in the second half. Junior Rachel Washburn's corner in the 49th minute connected with the boot of Michelle Rollins but skied over the crossbar.
Countering a Bulldogs threat, Tillar kick started a scoring chance for the Eagles. Flying through the midfield, Tillar led Rollins on a run on the nearside. Collecting the cross, Rollins edged her defender and sent a cross in front of goal but Butler's keeper jumped off her line sucking up Rollins' attempt.
EMU's final opportunity and best of the match, came in the 70th minute. After flawlessly transitioning through the midfield, quick ball movement ended with a one-touch pass by redshirt-freshman Kristin Nason to senior Megan Trapp in the box. With the keeper rushing off her line to snag the ball from Trapp's foot, a collision provided Trapp and the Eagles with a penalty kick opportunity. Stepping to the ball, the Plymouth, Michigan product placed her shot on frame but into the arms of a diving Bulldogs keeper.
Butler added a late tally in the 89th minute, sending the Eagles home with a 3-0 setback.
The Eagles continue their work on the road Friday, Aug. 28, in Chicago with a battle with the Blue Demons of DePaul University. The match is slated for 5 p.m.
