Megan McCabe tallied six saves for the Eagles in the loss
CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Opening play at the Loyola Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team faced off against No. 19 DePaul University. Falling behind early, the Eagles' missed opportunities spurned the Green and White as they fell, 7-0, at Loyola Soccer Park. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-3-0 on the season.
The Blue Demons (2-0-1, 0-0) opened scoring with a goal in the 16th minute before the Eagles countered four minutes later. Working the ball down the sideline, senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) delivered a cross into the box for junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio -Turpin). Oddan's cross connected with Tillar but the header soared over the crossbar.
Trailing by one, the Eagles faced consistent pressure from DePaul's attack. Standing strong as the Blue Demons sent crosses in front of goal, EMU was whistled for a foul inside the box moments later leading to a penalty kick for the Blue Demons and a 2-0 deficit for the Eagles.
As time dwindled in the opening half, the Eagles pressed looking to cut the Blue Demons' lead in half. In the 39th minute, redshirt-freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) earned a free kick three yards outside the box. Despite a well placed cross from junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), a foul on the Eagles ended the opportunity.
Following a few substitutions by Head Coach Scott Hall, fresh-legged junior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) created a scoring chance for the Green and White. Going toe-to-toe with her defender, Rollins sent a cross into the box for junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) but the play was disrupted by DePaul's keeper.
After a quick goal by DePaul opened play in the second Nason took a dive to the turf, giving the Eagles a free kick just outside the box in the 49th minute. Senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) stepped to the ball, clearing the four-person wall in front of her but sending the shot over frame.
Trapp's free kick served as the last scoring opportunity for the Eagles, as DePaul added four goals in the final 30 minutes.
