The Green and White hopes to pick up where it left off following the Lubbers Cup
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- After the Varsity Four secured the Michaud Family Cup at the 20th Annual Don Lubbers Cup a week ago, the Eastern Michigan University rowing team hopes to continue its winning ways at the 10th Annual Harvey Cup, hosted by the University at Buffalo Saturday, April 18.
The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years.
Eastern will be in search of its first Harvey Cup as the Bulls have come away with the win in the past nine seasons. EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title.
Last season, the Bulls retained the cup for the ninth-straight year when UB's Varsity Eight crossed the line at 6:46.09. This year, the Eagles look to improve upon a 6:57.90 finish from the Varsity Eight team as they currently sit in second in the CAA and rank 48th in national standings.
The Green and White's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight will first take on Mercyhurst, starting at 9:30 a.m. before concluding the day against the Bulls. Eastern and UB will be pitted against each other in three races, beginning with the Varsity Four at 1:45 p.m. Following the conclusion of the V4 race, the 2V8 boats will take off at 2 p.m. before the race for the Harvey Cup at 2:15 p.m.
