Gymnastics Continues Road Life at Michigan State: The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will head to East Lansing, Mich. for a tri-meet against the University of Arizona and Michigan State University Friday, Mar. 6. Meet time is slated for 6 p.m from Jenison Field House. The meet will mark the final time the Eagles will compete in the state of Michigan for the 2015 campaign as they travel to DeKalb, Ill for their final regular season meet against the Huskies of Northern Illinois, March 15.
Eagles Boast First Winning Season Since 2012: The Eagles' 12-2 overall record is the best record of any gymnastics team since the 2012 season, when the Green and White finished its season with a 10-9 overall record. Furthermore, the two losses the team has posted is the least amount since the 2008 season, when Eastern participated in just seven meets and completed the year with a 5-2 overall record.
Finally, the Eagles' 12 wins this season marks the most of any program since records started being tracked on EMUEagles.com in the 2006 campaign. Prior to this season, the most wins an EMU gymnastics team had posted since the 2006 season was 10 in the 2012 campaign.
Breaking the 195-Point Plateau: The 2015 Eastern Michigan gymnastics team has been all about breaking barriers this season under first year Head Coach Jay Santos, including tallying a EMU school record breaking 195.575 against Western Michigan, Feb. 20.
Not only have the Eagles broken the school record this season, but they have also posted the best record of any gymnastics team at Eastern Michigan in the past nine years and have broken the 195.000 barrier on four separate occasions. Prior to the Green and White's 195.250-192.425 win over Bowling Green State University, Jan. 24, the Eagles had not broken the 195-point barrier since the 2004 campaign when they tallied a then-school record 195.550 at the Mid-American Conference Championship, March 19, 2004.
Outscoring Its Competition: The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team secured three wins this past weekend with victories over Lindenwood, Illinois-Chicago and Illinois State, Feb. 28. In the meet, the Green and White outscored all three of its competitors on both the vault and the floor with scores of 48.925 and 49.125, respectively, while it tied with Lindenwood on the bars with a score of 48.650 and came in third on the beam with a 48.425.
The win marked the third time this season EMU has defeated UIC and the second time it has come away the victors against the Redbirds. Furthermore, the trio of victories improves the Eagles to 12-2 overall on the season.
Loehner and Slocum Lead Eagles on the Floor: Following a rough team performance on the beam at the Lindenwood Quad, redshirt-senior Chantelle Loehner and true freshman Rachel Slocum helped the Eagles get back on track with stellar floor performances. Loehner put together a career-tying performance with a 9.900 to notch her fifth floor title of the 2015 season, while Slocum tied a career high 9.875 with a second-place finish.
In a competitive event at the quad meet, Anna Willette placed seventh overall with a 9.800, which tied a career high and both Taylor Young and Sydney McEachern tied for ninth with matching 9.775s, which tied a career best for Young.
Eastern Finishes Strong at Lindenwood Quad: In its final event of the meet at the Lindenwood Quad, Eastern grabbed four of the top-five spots on the vault. Senior all-around competitor Anna Willette finished off her day with a team-best and season-best score of 9.850 to place second fo the Green and White, while Carrina Lo Bello was right behind Willette with a third-place finish after nabbing a 9.800 from the judges, which tied a career high. Placing fourth overall with a 9.775 was Kendall Valentin and tying for fifth with identical 9.750s were Sydney McEachern, Paulina Miller and Julia Schwartz, tying a career high for Miller.
Michigan State Ready to Host Tri-Meet: Much like Eastern Michigan, Michigan State comes in to its home meet after winning a quad meet this past weekend. The Spartans earned a season-best 196.275 to defeat Rutgers, Towson and Yale on the road, Feb. 27.
Sophomore Elena Logoski is a force to be reckoned with on the floor as she has notched a career-best 9.950 three times this season, including in her latest routine, while Alina Cartwright made a season debut with a 9.875 on the vault after coming back from an injury early in the 2015 campaign. The Spartans have really come on as of late, notching a season-best 49.075 on the beam, while Lisa Burt earned her fifth all-around title and three second-place finishes.
Arizona Heads to the Great Lakes State for Friday Competition: The Wildcats have put together a stellar season thus far, breaking the 195-point barrier in each of its eight meets and recording a season-best 197.850 against Utah, Jan. 31.
On the vault the team is lead by Shelby Edwards, who has posted an 9.875 on the apparatus, while Krysten Howard scored a team-best 9.850 on the bars and three athletes recording 9.825s.
