Eagles Take Down No. 23 Ranked Michigan State at Quad Meet

The Eagles placed third overall in the meet with season-best scores on both the vault and bars

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team placed third in the Michigan State Quad Meet Friday, March 6. The Eagles (13-4) earned 195.225 points on the afternoon to defeat No. 23 Michigan State in its home venue, but fell to both No. 19 University of Arizona and Bowling Green State University in the quad meet.
The win over the Spartans marks the first time Eastern has defeated a ranked team this season and only the second time in program history that the Green and White has downed MSU as Michigan State held a 35-1 all-time record over the Eagles prior to the meet. Furthermore, the win over the No. 23 Spartans is the first time an Eastern team has defeated a ranked team since at least 2006 when gymnastics records began being posted online.
The Wildcats took home the meet title with 195.450 overall points, while Bowling Green placed second with 195.250 points. Despite the two losses, the Green and White saw two season-best scores on the vault and the bars with tallies of 48.900 and 49.025, respectively.
"We had a tough rotation tonight; starting on beam can be a little nerve racking but they did a great job of fighting for everything and got us off to a great start and we built off of that momentum to hit four solid events," stated Head Coach Jay Santos. "This team continues to impress me with their ability to finish strong at meets. Our last two events really stepped it up capped off another strong meet for us."
Senior Anna Willette placed second in the all-around competition with a 39.150 including two season-best marks. The Pylesville, Md. native matched her career high and grabbed a season-best 9.875 on the vault and capped off the meet with a season-best 9.800 on the bars. Along with Willette, senior Carinna Lo Bello nabbed a fourth-place finish in the all-around competition with a 38.700, notching identical 9.725s on three out of her four routines.
Starting the meet off on the beam, sophomore Natalie Gervais led all Eagle scorers, tying for second with a 9.825 as she was barely edged out by Michigan State's Hailee Westney who nabbed a 9.850 on the apparatus. Following Gervais, Lacey Rubin placed eighth overall with a 9.775, while Lo Bello and Willette garnered matching 9.725s for the Green and White to lead EMU to a 48.675 team score.
Moving into the second rotation of the night, the Eagles saw some tough competition on the floor as redshirt-senior Chantelle Loehner earned the top spot in the EMU lineup with a 9.800 to tie for seventh overall, while Willette earned a 9.750 for the Green and White. Both Sydney McEachern and Rachel Slocum nabbed identical 9.700s in the rotation and the team scored a 48.625 in the second event of the meet.
The Green and White really came together on the vault, nabbing a season-best 48.900 on the apparatus as well as seeing three individual career-high performances. Willette led the EMU lineup with a third-place finish, earning a season-best 9.875 which also ties her career-best, while freshman Julia Schwartz topped her career-high with a 9.825 for a fifth-place finish. Senior Paulina Miller also tied a previous career high with a 9.750, while McEachern and Lo Bello notched matching 9.725s for the Green and White.
Eastern capped off the night with one final season-best performance, nabbing a 49.025 on the uneven bars and garnering three career-high performances and one season best. Rubin and Kendall Valentin tied for third overall with identical 9.850s in the final event of the night. The mark was a career best for Rubin and tied a career high for Valentin. Tying for eighth overall with matching 9.800s were Catie Conrad and Willette. The score was a career best for Conrad, topping her previous career high of 9.775. Lo Bello and Nikki Paterson rounded out the scoring for the Green and White with a 9.725 and 9.400, respectively.
The Eastern Michigan gymnastics team concludes its regular season when it heads to DeKalb, Ill. for its final Mid-American Conference meet against the Huskies of Northern Illinois University. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 15.
