DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team fell to the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, 195.800-195.525, in its final regular season Mid-American Conference competition Sunday, March 15.
The meet marked the fifth-straight time that the Eagles have scored over 195 points in a meet and the sixth time this season they have broken the 195-point barrier. Furthermore, the final score ranks as the third-highest score in EMU school history as the Eagles broke the school record earlier this season.
EMU outscored NIU in two events, excelling on both the bars and beam with scores of 49.975 and 48.950, respectively. The 48.950 on the beam marks a season-best for the Eagles, surpassing its previous best of 48.900.
"I'm really proud of the team's performance today," said Head Coach Jay Santos. "We went on the road and got our second highest score of the year and with the conference meet less than a week away it's great to see them hit a strong meet on the road. It wasn't completely smooth sailing as we had a couple mistakes; one on floor and one on beam. But as this team has done many times this year they showed they can handle adversity with the rest of the line-up hitting and not having to count those mistakes; the girls did a great job."
"I still don't feel we have reached our full potential and I think we can still perform a little stronger," noted Santos. "We will work hard on the details this week in practice so we can put it all together at MACs this weekend."
Senior Anna Willette won the all-around competition for the Green and White scoring a 39.00 for her fifth title of the 2015 season, while Carrina Lo Bello finished second with a 38.425.
Starting on the uneven bars, Kendall Valentin nabbed the title with a career-high 9.875, while Lacey Rubin placed second with a 9.800 for the Green and White. Two Eagles, Lo Bello and Catie Conrad, tied for fourth overall with 9.775s and Willette placed eighth with a 9.750. Senior Nikki Paterson rounded out the scoring with a 9.725 and a ninth-place finish for EMU.
Moving to the vault, Valentin again led the Green and White with a top-three finish, placing second overall notching a 9.800. Lo Bello and Willette finished fourth with identical 9.775s and both Paulina Miller and Julia Schwartz garnered seventh-place finishes with 9.725s.
In the third rotation of the afternoon, Northern Illinois was impressive after taking the top-three spots, while floor specialists Rachel Slocum and Chantelle Loehner tied for sixth with matching 9.800s. EMU grabbed one final top-10 finish with an eighth-place finish for Taylor Young, who scored a 9.750.
The Eagles saw one final titlist on the beam as Natalie Gervais notched a team-best and career-best 9.875. Both Lo Bello and Rubin placed fourth with 9.800s and Willette earned a sixth-place finish with a 9.775. Conrad earned a ninth-place finish for the Green and White with a 9.700 and Kimberly Ebeyer rounded out the scoring with an 8.950.
