Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Detroit

Senior Jenn Lucas drove in four RBI for the Green and White
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split its mid-week non-conference doubleheader with the Titans of the University of Detroit Wednesday, March 25. The Eagles (8-16) fell 8-7 in game one in eight innings before coming back to defeat the Titans (2-21), 11-8, in game two.
EMU was led by Myranda Barnes and Abby Davidson in game one as both went 2-for-3 at the dish, while Katy Wyman drove in three runs for the Green and White. Sophomore pitcher Abbie Minsker suffered the loss in game one after pitching five innings in relief of starter Lindsay Rich.
In game two, the Eagles were paced by senior Jenn Lucas who drove in four runs, while Barnes and Michelle Kriegshauser plated two runs apiece for Eastern. Freshman hurler Trisha Trujillo earned the win in the circle, pitching four innings, while Alyssa Huntley hurled three innings of relief.
Barnes finished the day going 3-for-7 at the plate and scoring twice for the Eagles, while Kriegshauser went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Game One: Detroit 8, Eastern Michigan 7 (8)
The Titans used a homer in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Green and White before Eastern Michigan notched two runs in the top of the second inning to take its first lead of the contest. A Taylor Wagner leadoff infield single put a runner on base for EMU, while she moved to second on a groundout to third base. Davidson plated Wagner on a double down the right field line to knot the score at 1-1. Eastern's second run of the inning came around to score when Davidson advanced the third on a single to the shortstop and touched home on a Detroit miscue.
Back-to-back home runs in the bottom half the inning put the game back into the hands of the Titans and forced an EMU pitching change. With runners in scoring position, the Eagles recorded two outs but a single through the infield would bring in two more runs, allowing UDM to take a 5-2 lead over Eastern Michigan.
Detroit sat the Eagles down in order in the top of the third inning before tacking on a sixth run in the bottom half of the inning to take the 6-2 advantage.
EMU put together a four run inning in the top of the fifth inning, using three hits. Barnes led off the inning with a single, while Lucas followed it up with a single to right field to move Barnes within 60 ft. of home. A play at the plate would get Barnes out, but advance Lucas to second base, while a back-to-back walks loaded the bases for EMU with one out. A wild pitch brought in the first run of the inning for the Green and White, leaving two runners on base for Wyman. Wyman dug in and ripped a three-run round-tripper over the left center fence to knot the score for the second time of the game.
The Eagles took the lead for the second time of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Davidson double to left center and Barnes brought her in on a long sacrifice fly to left field. Detroit answered back to tie the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning, while neither team was able to push a run across the plate in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Kriegshauser led off the inning with a walk, but the Titans sat down the next three batters of the inning to keep the score tied at 7-7. Kayla Kostich secured the UDM win when she launched a walk-off homer over the left center field wall, allowing the Titans to earn the 8-7 victory.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 11, Detroit 8
Detroit took the first lead in the second leg of the doubleheader when back-to-back walks proved to be detrimental to the Eagles. With runners on second and third two outs, a wild pitch brought in the first run of the inning before an error scored the second run for UDM.
The Green and White lit up the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs for Haley Hostetler. The freshman shortstop laced a single into left center to score a run and Barnes followed it up with a walk to plate the second run of the inning. With one out recorded and a pitching change for the Titans, Lucas drove a three-run home run over dead center that would allow Eastern Michigan to take a 6-2 lead heading into the third inning.
After a leadoff single, Katy Severson worked her away around the bases with a wild pitch and a ground out to the opposite side of the field before touching home on a single to third base to bring Detroit within three of Eastern.
The Green and White extended its lead to seven in the top of the third inning when a double from Rich put a runner in scoring position before a single to right field moved pinch runner Mady Hostetler 60 ft. from home. Barnes slapped a ball to first base that forced a Detroit error and scored Hostetler. Kriegshauser continued to be clutch at the plate for the Eagles, driving in two runs on a double through the right center gap to allow EMU to take the 10-3 over the Titans.
Detroit added three runs when two walks put runners on base and a homer over the left center wall, bringing the score to 10-6 in favor of the Eagles. Eastern Michigan tacked on an 11th run in the top of the fourth inning when Rich drove a one-out solo homer to right field.
The Titans continued to fight back their way back into the game, notching two runs off of three his in the bottom of the fifth inning allowing them to come within three of the Green and White, 11-8. EMU shut down the UDM offense the rest of the contest to secure the second game win over Detroit.
The Eagles will return to Varsity Field to open up Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 27 when they take on the Cardinals of Ball State in a doubleheader event starting at 1 p.m.
