Eagles' Rally Falls Short Against Miami in MAC Opener

3/28/2015 6:10:00 PM | Softball

EMU knotted the score in the seventh but it was not enough as Miami notched the 9-7 win in extra innings

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After making a comeback to knot the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a heartbreaker in the eighth inning to the Miami University RedHawks in the opening contest of Mid-American Conference action Saturday, March 28.

The Eagles (8-17, 0-1 MAC) tallied three home runs in the contest, including round-trippers from Michelle Kriegshauser, Taylor Wagner and Katy Wyman, while EMU notched seven of its eight hits in the final two innings of the game. Kriegshauser led the Green and White at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Wagner and Wyman each brought in two runs.

Freshman pitcher Trisha Trujillo made her 10th start of the season, tossing two complete innings, while Alyssa Huntley came on in relief to throw six innings for Eastern. Huntley suffered the loss after the Eagles knotted the score in the seventh inning, giving the sophomore pitcher her first decision of the 2015 season. Despite the loss, Huntley gave up just five hits and three earned runs, while striking out two batters.

The RedHawks (17-11, 1-0 MAC) opened up conference play with 12 hits, while Bree Lipscomb went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and Remy Edwards notched two hits in four at-bats and plated two runs for MU.

Amber Logemann earned the start in the circle for Miami, pitching five complete innings, allowing just one hit, before relief pitcher Megan Materra came in for the RedHawks. With Eastern making its comeback, MU was forced to re-enter Logemann in the seventh to capture the victory.

The RedHawks nabbed the first lead of the contest in the top of the second inning when Bree Lipscomb led off the inning with a single and touched home on a Remy Edwards single just over the glove of the shortstop. A walk loaded the bases with one out for MU. With bases loaded, Trujillo made the easy play to home to record the second out of the inning, but a short single to left center brought in a second run before the Eagles were able to close out the inning.

Miami added to its tally in the top of the third inning when three-straight hits, including a leadoff double, brought in one run and a wild pitch scored a second to extend the MU lead to 4-0. The RedHawks used another single and a sacrifice bunt to bring in two final runs to take the 6-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

An error by the Miami right fielder allowed Kriegshauser to get to second base, while a walk put runners on first and second for the Green and White. Pinch runner Elaine Whitbeck moved to third on a sacrifice bunt with one out, but the RedHawk defense secured the final two outs it needed on a fly out to left and a strikeout to maintain the 6-0 lead over EMU heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Eastern Michigan put some runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Clark reached base on a fielder's choice before Wyman ripped a two-out homer over the left field fence to plate two runs for the Green and White.

Miami notched a seventh run in the top of the seventh inning when an error moved runners into scoring position and a double to the center field wall plated a run.

EMU battled in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hostetler beat out a sharp hit ball to the shortstop before moving to second on an error. With runners on first and second, Kriegshauser launched the second home run of the day for the Green and White with a line drive over the center field fence. The run brought EMU within two, 7-5, of the RedHawks with only one out.

Eastern used a second two-run round-tripper when Wagner blasted a homer over the right center field fence to knot the score at 7-7 with two outs on the board. Rich drew a two-out walk while an error moved her to second base but Logemann grabbed a big strikeout to record the third out and send the game into extra innings.

A leadoff walk in the top of the eighth proved to be detrimental to the Eagles as the runner touched home on an EMU error, allowing Miami to take the 8-7 lead. After Marshall made her way to third on the error she would touch home on a single up the middle, extending the lead to 9-7 with two outs.

Needing to make a comeback, Jenn Lucas laced a one-out triple to the center field fence, but Miami sat down the next two batters to earn the 9-7 extra-inning victory over the Green and White.

Eastern and Miami conclude the two-game series Sunday, March 29. First pitch from Varsity Field is slated for 1 p.m.
