Softball Lands 11 on Academic All-MAC Team

EMU's 11 selections were tied for the most in the conference
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan softball team had 11 student-athletes named to the All-Mid-American Conference Academic Team for the 2018 season, the league office announced Monday, June 4. EMU's 11 selections ranked tied for the most in the league with Kent State. A total 91 student-athletes were named to the team.
Making the team for the Green and White were: seniors Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan), Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace), Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline), and Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California), juniors Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview), Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles), and Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena), and sophomores Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant), Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce), and Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman). It marked the third time Hostetler, Olmos, Schilke, and Trujillo have been named to the team.
Hostetler, an elementary education major with a 3.61 GPA, appeared in all 50 games for the Eagles. In her final season patrolling the outfield, the New Haven, Ind. native racked up 32 hits, including a career-best 12 doubles, while also adding 11 RBI's. She finished the year ranked tied for ninth in the leauge in doubles and tied for seventh in hit by pitches, while her perfect 1.000 MAC-only fielding percentage tied for the best in the conference. For her career, Hostetler belted 30 two-baggers, the 14th-most in EMU annals. Additionally, she finished her career as EMU's record holder in games played (201), games started (200), and stolen base percentage (93.0). Hostetler played in 201 consecutive games during her time donning the Green and White, making starts at first base, second base, shortstop, and in the outfield.
A criminology major, Olmos graduate with a 3.82 grade point average. The Riverside, Calif. native played in 49 games for the Eagles, making 47 starts between second base, shortstop, and DP. She posted 29 hits, including three doubles, and tallied 15 runs batted in. Olmos was also part of an EMU defense that turned 11 double plays, the ninth-most all-time and the most since 2012.
Schilke graduated with a degree in chemistry earlier this spring, owning a 3.34 GPA. The Saline, Mich. product put together the best season of her career in 2018, appearing in 46 games and making 41 starts. She set career-highs in nearly every statistical category includes; hits, doubles, triples, RBIs, and walks. Her 24 free passes and seven stolen bases were the most of any Eagle, while her perfect 1.000 MAC-only fielding percentage in right field tied for the best in the league. For her career, Schilke finished with 31 stolen bases, the 11th-most in EMU history.
A Second Team All-MAC selection, Akles owns a 3.23 grade point average as a criminology major. A two-time MAC West Division Player of the Week honoree, Akles put together a career year in 47 games in 2018. The La Habra, Calif. native hit a career-best .358 at the plate, the best of any Eagle. She recorded 49 hits and posted career-highs in runs scored (20), home runs (9), walks (18), slugging percentage (.650), and on-base percentage (.428). Akles ranked eighth in EMU single-season laurels with 13 doubles and homers, while she also ranked inside the conference's top-15 in six categories.
Logan, a dietetics major with a 3.60 GPA, started 33 games at first base for the Eagles before being sidelined due to injury. She hit a career-high .280 at the plate, recording 26 base knocks, including six doubles and two triples. Logan also owned a career-best .994 fielding percentage, and was a crucial part of an EMU defense that turned 11 double plays, the ninth-most all-time and most since 2012. Logan's best game of the season came against Central Arkansas, March 2, when the Riverview, Mich. product went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. For her career, Logan ranks sixth in putouts with 778, while her .988 fielding percentage is slotted tied for third-best.
A key piece of EMU's pitching staff, Miranda appeared in 32 games for the Green and White, making 25 starts. She recorded five wins, tossed 10 complete games, and registered a shutout. A product design and development major with a 3.51 GPA, Miranda tossed a team-high 147.0 innings, striking out 86. She finished the season ranked eighth in the MAC in batters struck out looking, ninth in innings pitched, 11th in strikeouts, and 14th in opponent
batting average. She notched a complete game shutout in her final start of the season, striking out a season-high eight in EMU's 2-0 win at Western Michigan, May 4. It was EMU's first win over WMU since 2011, a span of 15 games.
Peters owns a 3.81 grade point average as a chemistry major. She played in 42 games for the Eagles, making three starts in left field. She set career-highs in at bats, hits, RBI, and fielding percentage, while also serving as EMU's top pinch runner. Peters went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI in EMU's walk-off win over Oakland, May, 2.
Holding a 3.38 GPA, Anderson lands on the list for the first time in her career. As a sophomore, Anderson appeared in 32 games, making 20 starts at second base. She recorded a career-high in hits with 14, while also compiling a .259 batting average.
Chretien, an aviation major with a 3.92 GPA, played in an started 35 games for the Eagles between second base and shortstop. She posted career-highs in three statistical categories including batting average, hits, and fielding percentage. Chretien was a middle infielder for an EMU defense that turned 11 double plays, the ninth-most in Eastern laurels and most since 2012.
Isaly finished the year with a 3.41 GPA as a nursing major. She appeared in 43 games, making 30 starts for the Eagles as a sophomore. After taking over the starting role at first base due to Olivia Logan's season-ending injury, Isaly registered career-bests in hits, runs, batting average, walks, and fielding percentage.
