EMU CLOSES OUT 2015 TOURNAMENTS IN KANSAS: The Eastern Michigan University softball team will close out its tournament schedule when the team flocks to Lawrence, Kan. for the Kansas Tournament, March 20-22. The Eagles will take on No. 22 Kansas, Georgia State and UMKC in the three-day span.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST WEEKEND OPPONENTS: The Eagles hold a 6-7 all-time combined record against this weekend's opponents, facing off with UMKC a total of six times, holding the 4-2 series advantage, while Kansas carries the 2-1 all-time series over EMU and Georgia State is 3-1 against the Green and White.
EAGLES FALL IN SEASON HOME OPENER TO UND: The Eagles were unable to grab a win in their 2015 home opener, falling to the University of North Dakota in the doubleheader affair. The Eagles first fell 5-4 in game one before taking game two into extra innings after battling back to knot the score at 4-4. EMU could not notch the runs it needed, losing 6-5 in eight innings in game two.
SCOUTING No. 22 KANSAS: The Jayhawks are red-hot heading into this weekend's tournament, coming in as the No. 22 team in the national rankings and posting a 25-2 overall record.
Kansas is on a six-game winning streak, hitting .351 as a team with Maddie Stein holding a 10-game hitting streak for the Jayhawks at a .390 clip, while both Chaley Brickey and Briana Evans are hitting over .400 with .414 and .404 batting averages, respectively. Four Kansas hitters have notched 30-or-more hits on the season with 23 homeruns as a team, while Brickey has a team-best five homers and 34 RBI in the 2015 campaign. Furthermore, the Jayhawks have posted eight grand slams in 2015 and are just four away from setting a new national season-season record.
In the circle, Alicia Pille has dominated her opponents with a 15-0 overall record in 20 appearances, while she carries a 1.52 ERA in 101.1 innings of work. Furthermore, Pille has fanned 112 batters this season and given up just 63 hits and 22 earned runs. Sharing the work load with Pille is Monique Wesley, who has pitched a second-best 26.1 innings, while Bryn Houlton has tossed 21.1 innings with a second-best 2.63 ERA.
A LOOK AT GEORGIA STATE: The Eagles and the Panthers have already faced off once this season with Georgia State coming out as the victors with a 6-1 decision over the Green and White, Feb. 27.
The Panthers enter the tournament with a 19-3 overall record, winning 16 of their last 17 games. Freshman Ivie Drake leads the GSU offense with a .545 batting average and a 1.045 slugging percentage in her first collegiate season while posting 36 hits, nine doubes and 31 RBI. Senior Callie Alford has also shown a powerful bat in 2015 with eight homers and a .408 batting average, while Georgia State is hitting .346 as a team this season.
The GSU pitching staff has stuggled a bit in terms of earned runs, but has had its bright spot in sophomore Taylor Thorpe who posts a 10-0 mark this season in 62.0 innings of work. The sophomore has recorded 26 strikeouts, while the staff as a whole has fanned 108 batters this season. Collectively, the Panther pitching staff carries a 4.19 ERA in 145.1 innings of action.
PEAKING AT UMKC: The 'Roos come into this weekends tournament with a 13-12 overall record, posting victories in three of its last four contests. Like the other two teams at the tournamnet, UMKC is powerful at the plate, carring a team batting average of .313 into the weekend. The 'Roos are led by Katie Kelley, who is hitting at a .418 clip with 33 hits, including 12 doulbes and nine homers for 29 RBI. The junior pitcher also boasts a .911 slugging percentage this season and a .459 on-base percentage. Senior Cinda Ramos is also hitting above .400 with a .410 batting average with 32 hits and 21 RBI in the 2015 season. Along with its hitting, the 'Roos are dangerous on the basepath, stealing 26 bases on 36 attemps. Brooke Parker has proven to be a threat to catchers, swiping 11 bases on 12 attemps in the 2015 season.
The pitching staff holds a 5.14 combined ERA this season, with Kelley making a team-best 15 appearances. Amber Grove holds the best ERA on the staff with a 4.47 in 31.1 innings pitchd, while Kelley has tossed a team-high 68.0 innings this season.
