The Eagles fell in five innings to No. 22 Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell in five innings in its first game of the Kansas Tournament to tournament host, No. 22 the University of Kansas, 13-2 Friday, March 20.
The Eagles (6-12) took the first lead of the game scoring two runs in the first inning, but the powerful Jayhawk offense responded with 10 runs of their own to mercy the Green and White in five innings.
EMU was led by senior Lindsay Rich who went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI, while pitching four innings with three strikeouts. Freshmen Brandice Olmos and Haley Hostetler were the only other Eagles to notch hits as each tallied one for the Green and White.
The Jayhawks outhit EMU 9-3, using multi-hit games from both Chaley Brickey and Daniella Chavez, while Lily Behrmann brought in four RBI for KU with a grand slam in the first inning.
The Eagles started their offense early when Olmos singled to left field and Jenn Lucas followed it up with a walk to put runners on first and second for Rich. The starting pitcher helped herself when she laced a double to the center field wall, plating both Olmos and Lucas to allow EMU to take the 2-0 lead over Kansas.
The Jayhawks used three walks and a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to bring in their first run of the contest. KU's Chavez singled through the right side to bring in the tying run, forcing Head Coach Melissa Gentile to make a pitching change early in the game. Sophomore Alyssa Huntley walked her first batter and gave up back-to-back singles followed by back-to-back walks that would allow Kansas to take a 6-2 lead. Rich re-entered the contest in the circle for the Green and White with bases load before Behrmann launched a grand slam over the left center wall to extend the Jayhawk lead to 10-2.
Kansas continued to build on its lead in the bottom of the third inning, using four hits to score three runs and take a 13-2 lead into the fourth inning. The Eagles were unable to push any further runs across the plate, falling 13-2 to the nationally-ranked Jayhawks in five innings in their first game of the Kansas Tournament.
Eastern Michigan will be back in action Saturday, March 21 when it takes on Georgia State and UMKC. Game one against the Panthers is slated for 10:30 a.m. followed by a 3:30 contest with the 'Roos.
