YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool after a three-week long break from competition, in dual action against Oakland University. Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) and junior Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) combined for five first place finishes as the Eagles topped the Golden Grizzlies, 180.5-119.5 in Jones Natatorium, Saturday, Nov. 7.
Following second and third place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay, sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) put the Eagles in front, finishing first and second, respectively, in the 1000 Freestyle.
On the heels of the Eagles' long-distance win, Henry rode an early lead to his first victory of the day in the 200 Free. Freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) touched in in third place, with a time of 1:42.42.
The Eagles then went on to split the next four events. Oakland earned wins in the 50 Free and 100 Breaststroke while EMU claimed victory in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Butterfly. Senior Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) tied for second in the 50 free while senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) edged out Oakland's John Schihl for second place in the 100 Breast.
In the 100 Back, junior Cole Bateman's (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutschinson) impressive opening split propelled him to victory with freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) touching in just behind. Rzyski reeled in his first win of the day in the 200 Fly while senior Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland / Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) rounded out the top-three.
Rzyski's win proved to be a turning point in the dual as the Eagles claimed the top spot in the next four events. Henry outswam the field in the 100 Free before Kawaguchi (200 Back), Hodges (200 Breast), and Rzyski (500 Free) registered wins to move the Eagles' lead to 137-89.
After Oakland won the 100 Fly, the teams took a break from swimming events and duked it out on the springboard where junior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary School) and senior Dan Gironza (New Hudson, Mich.-South Lyon) ruled. Completing dives with a much higher difficulty, Chan and Gironza were rewarded with high scores from the judges. Chan posted his best score of the season, 368.70, off the 1-meter springboard to earn the victory. Gironza placed second, posting a score of 292.80.
The Green and White closed out completion with a one-two punch in the 200 Individual Medley and second and third place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Henry paced the field, touching in at 1:51.00 for his third first place finish of the day while Kawaguchi finished in second.
With the win over Oakland, the Eagles will head into next weekend's showdown with Ohio State with a 2-0 record. Competition against the Buckeyes is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium, Saturday, Nov. 14.
