YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Facing off against No. 8 Ohio State, Saturday, Nov. 14, in Jones Natatorium, the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team's veteran upperclassmen led the Eagles in a 203.5-96.5 setback. Despite a lopsided score against one of the nation's best teams, the Green and White saw plenty of strong performances.
Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) claimed victory in the 200 Freestyle for the third time this season. Trailing at the midway point, Henry swam the final split nearly two seconds faster than anyone else to overtake Ohio State's Steffen Hillmer and earn the first place finish.
Senior Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) later added a first place finish to his day, edging out Mossimo Chavez with a time of 21.20. The win marked the first of the season for Crompton in the event.
Continuing the strong showing by the senior class, Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) posted a pair of top-three finishes. Besides also taking second in the 100 Breaststroke, Hodges opened his afternoon with a convincing win in the 200 Breast.
In addition to a trio of first place finishes by Henry, Crompton, and Hodges, the Eagles added six top-three finishes to their day. Senior Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) took third in the 100 Butterfly while juniors Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community) and Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) also turned in third-place finishes. Senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) posted a second place finish in the 200 Backstroke while freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) added a pair of second place finishes in the 100 Free and 200 Fly.
On the springboard junior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary School) continued his sensational season, posting a pair of 300+ scores to notch second and third place finishes in the diving events. Claiming third in the 3-meter event, Chan was beat out by Ohio State's Colin Zeng in the 1-meter. Scoring 365.40, Chan finished 1.43 points behind Zeng.
With the 203.5-96.5 loss, the Eagles drop to 2-1 in dual action this season. Next on the docket for the Green and White is a break from dual competion as the Eagles are set to host the EMU Invitational in Jones Natatorium, Dec. 4-5. Competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4.
