YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Strong performances by a trio of juniors pushed the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team past Oakland University, 193.5-104.5, Saturday, Nov. 7, in Jones Natatorium. Junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) racked up three first place finishes while fellow juniors Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) and Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) added two each.
The Eagles exerted their dominance in the 200 Medley Relay, opening the afternoon by claiming the top-two spots in the event. Mitcheltree and Jackson teamed up with junior Genna Worthley (Porltand, Maine-Deering) and senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) as the veteran cohort touched in with a time of 1:43.71. On their heels, the freshmen foursome of Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Dora Vrcic, and Stephanie Johnston added four points to the Eagles' total, finishing with a time of 1:44.12.
Freshman Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) extended Eastern Michigan's lead, finishing two seconds ahead of the field in the 1000 Freestyle. The victory marked the second of the season for Swartz in the event.
Van Allen made her first appearance of the day in the 200 Free following Swartz's win. Trailing after the first split, Van Allen swam past a pair of Golden Grizzlies on her way to a first place finish. Junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) rounded out the top-three, posting a time of 1:53.82.
The Green and White posted their strongest all-around effort in the 100 Backstroke, where the Eagles swept the top-three spots. Mitcheltree registered her third win of the season in the event while Liberman and freshman Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) finished second and third, respectively.
Oakland earned a few points back and closed the gap in the 100 Breaststroke, but Worthley's second place finish kept the Golden Grizzlies from claiming all three top spots.
The Eagles returned the favor of the near sweep in the next event as Jackson and senior Claire Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) sandwiched an Oakland swimmer in the 200 Butterfly. The win marked the third consecutive victory in the event for Jackson.
Taking a break from swimming events, the teams turned their focus to diving. On the springboard, the Eagles took over, claiming the top five spots in the 1-meter event. Sophomore Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) led the field, scoring 253.43, while sophomores Mattie Boucha (Northville, Mich.-Northville) (249.75) and Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) (241.20) racked in points for the Green and White as well.
MacLean and Johnston moved the Eagles lead to 87.5-43.5 in the 50 Free as the teams resumed swimming events. MacLean held off a late push by Oakland's Nikki Flynn, touching in two hundredths of a second before her to claim the win while Johnston finished with a time of 23.96.
The Golden Grizzlies claimed first and second in the 100 Free but Wagner's third place finish added to the Eagles' point total before Mitcheltree returned to the pool in the 200 Back. Claiming her second win of the day, Mitcheltree finished three seconds ahead of second place while Guenther won the battle for third place.
Following a third place finish by Worthley in the 200 Breast, Van Allen notched her second win of the day in the 500 Free. Leading from the start, Van Allen touched in at 5:01.55 while Swartz added a third place finish to her day.
With three events to go and the dual well-in-hand, Jackson and Van Allen registered individual wins before the Green and White closed out completion with a strong showing in the 400 Free Relay. Jackson won the 100 Fly while Vrcic finished third in the event before Van Allen and Daniel took first and third, respectively, in the 200 Individual Medley.
Closing out competition, the foursome of Wagner, MacLean, Vrcic, and Mitcheltree paced the field with Desnoyers, Johnston, Jackson, and Liberman following in third as the Eagles' sealed victory over the Golden Grizzlies.
Taking the dual 193.5-104.5, the Eagles move to 3-0 on the season with a tough matchup on the horizon. The Green and White will return to the pool, Saturday, Nov. 14, against Ohio State. Competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
