YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team battled the Ohio State Buckeyes to the end, Saturday, Nov. 14, but ultimately fell short by a score of 175-113. Senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) and junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) turned in second place finishes in the loss.
The Eagles opened the afternoon by claiming second and third in the 200 Medley Relay. MacLean teamed up with junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area),as well as freshmen Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and Dora Vrcic to finish on the heels of Ohio State's top relay team, touching in with a time of 1:43.53. Freshmen Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin) and Stephanie Johnston, and juniors Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) and Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte), placed third, finishing in 1:44.85.
From there, MacLean and Van Allen added second place finishes before five other Eagles added third place marks. MacLean led after the first split of the 100 Freestyle but could not hold off a late charge by Ohio State's Katy Luchansky, ultimately taking second. Van Allen tangled with Luchansky in the 200 Free, nearly catching her on the last leg of the race but taking second with a time of 1:51.66.
Worthley (200 Breaststroke), Duncan (100 Breast), Jackson (200 Fly), and Mitcheltree (100 Backstroke) registered third place finishes for the Eagles.
Sophomore diver Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) went toe-to-toe with Ohio State on the springboard, posting a score of 269.11 in the 1-meter event to take third.
The Eagles went on to sweep the remaining events as the Buckeyes forfeited points for the remainder of the meet, eventually fallign 175-113.
Eastern Michigan will take a break from competition for the next three weeks before returning to the pool for the EMU Invitiational, Dec. 4-5. Competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, in Jones Natatorium.
