YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returns to the pool, three weeks after knocking off Northwestern University to open the season, against Oakland, Saturday, Nov. 7. Competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium as the squads meet for the 10th time in the past decade.
A CLOSER LOOK AT OAKLAND: Opening the season with two Horizon League wins, Oakland has carried over their success from last season's conference championship. The Golden Grizzlies are led by Toumas Kiviluoma and Stirling Fordham.
Kiviluoma has collected three first-place finishes this season individually while also playing a large role on Oakland's relay teams. With wins in the 100 and 200 Freestyle, Kiviluoma will face a steep challenge in Eastern Michigan senior Andrew Heny (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston).
Fordham's impact comes on the springboard where he will be pitted against a talented EMU diving squad, headlined by junior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary School). Fordham swept the one and three-meter events against Wayne State in Oakland's most recent outing.
RECENT HISTORY VERSUS OAKLAND: The Eagles and Golden Grizzlies have faced off 10 times over the past decade, with Eastern Michigan holding a 6-4 edge in recent history. Winners of the last two meetings, the Eagles will look to notch their third straight win over Oakland, Saturday, Nov. 7, at Jones Natatorium.
TOSH, TYSON, TURN IN TOP-THREE FINISHES: Freshmen Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) combined for four top-three finishes in the Eagles, 182-118 win over Northwestern. Kawaguchi claimed a pair of first place marks in the 100 and 200 Backstroke before adding a second place finish in the 200 Individual Medley to his EMU debut. Tyson used an early lead in 200 Freestyle to rake in his first top-three finish as an Eagle.
SEASONED VETERANS DOMINATE WILDCATS: Seniors Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) and Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) opened their final season sporting the Green and White in dominating fashion against Northwestern. Henry swept the 100 and 200 Freestyle while Hodges wrapped up first place finishes in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke. Henry and Hodges began the afternoon teaming up for a top finish in the 200 Medley Relay before Henry anchored the Eagles' first place 400 Free Relay squad.
DIVERS POST STRONG START TO SEASON: Junior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary School) finished with marks of 314.47 and 343.42, in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, respectively, in the Eagles' season opener. While Chan claimed first in each event as the only diver to post scores of 300 or higher in both events, senior Dan Gironza's (New Hudson, Mich.-South Lyon) score of 295.35 in the 1-meter event was good for second place.
CLOSING IN ON 250: Head Coach Peter Linn's 27-year tenure at Eastern Michigan has guided the Eagles to a number of successes over the years. Following Saturday's win over Miami, Linn's career record on the women's side sits at 60-35 in his 11-year career at the helm of both the men's and women's squads. Additionally, the win moves Linn's total coaching record to 244-91, good for a .728 winning percentage. With plenty of opportunities on the schedule for each of Linn's teams, he could reach the 250 win mark this season.
HENRY REELS IN MAC ACCOLADE: Senior swimmer Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) was named Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week for his role in the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team's win over Northwestern last week, the conference announced Tuesday, Oct. 20. With the honor, Henry is the first EMU swimmer to earn the conference award this season.
A significant piece of the relay team's success, Henry added a pair of individual wins over the Wildcats. In the 200 Freestyle, Henry bested the field by nearly two seconds before wrapping up his fourth win of the day in the 100 Free. Henry's strong opening performance led Eastern Michigan past Northwestern for the first time since 2011.
The announcement marked fourth time Henry has receieved the honor over the course of his career, with the last award coming, Nov. 10, 2014. The Garner, N.C. product is the first EMU swimmer to earn the honor since Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston) did so, Feb. 23, 2015.
HOMESTAND ALLOWS EAGLES TO ENJOY COMFORTS OF JONES: Competing in the friendly confines of Jones Natatorium for the first two months of the season, the Eagles will take part in a trio of non-conference duals before hosting the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5. The Green and White boast a 11-1 mark at home over the past three seasons.
EMU OPENS SEASON AS PRESEASON FAVORITES TO WIN MAC: Coming off a successful 2014-15 season in which the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team claimed the Mid-American Conference title and qualified two for nationals, the Eagles were voted to repeat as MAC Champions, the conference announced, Thursday, Oct. 1. The Green and White received five first place votes while conference rival Missouri State University was voted second with two first place votes.
EMU and Missouri State were slated to finish first and second respectively, with Buffalo rounding out the top three. The Eagles have won 68 consecutive MAC duals, dating back to the 1997-98 season and look to be in a position to continue their run in the conference with the return of several key pieces.

EXPERIENCED VETERANS SET TO TAKE CHARGE: With the loss of long-time leader Mike Fisher to graduation, Head Coach Peter Linn and his coaching staff will turn to a proven group of veterans to lead the squad this season. Junior Alex Chan is one of the elite divers in the nation heading into his third season with the Green and White. A two-time Mid-American Conference Champion and an NCAA qualifier a season ago on the 3-meter springboard, Chan will lead a diving cohort that includes junior Dan Gironza. On the swimming side, the Eagles welcome back seven swimmers who hold times in the program's top-10. Krzysztof Gilski, Cole Bateman, Erik Gissen, Chris Cutter, Kyle Aerne, Andrew Henry, and Kyle Lichtenberg will headline a talented group of returners that helped the Green and White win the MAC Championships last season.
TIME TO DEFEND LAST YEAR'S TITLE: Led by Mike Fisher and sophomore Alex Chan, the Eagles claimed the Mid-American Conference crown in 2014. With hopes of achieving the same and more in 2015, the Green and White will be forced to do so without Fisher. A NCAA qualifier a season ago, Fisher holds EMU records in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke as one of the Eagles' most elite swimmers. Losing Fisher to graduation, EMU turns to a talented group of returners to lead the charge while the newcomers adjust to collegiate competition.
