—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team earned its first Mid-American Conference dual victory of the 2014-15 campaign, taking down the University at Buffalo, Jan. 24.  With the 187-107 decision, the Eagles boast a record of 4-1 (1-0 MAC), while the Bulls fall to 4-3 (1-1 MAC).

Saturday's meet was also Alumni Day for the Green and White.  During the break before the 200 IM, 11 former EMU swimmers and divers were welcomed on deck to be recognized by the crowd, including:  Chris Alberty, 2010; Wesley Blassneck, 2013; Tyler Capen, 2013; Kevin Doak, 2003; Alan Duski, 2012;Gus Everson, 2014; Mark Johnson, 1997; Aaron Lawson, 2014; Gilles Renard, 2012; Jackie Swartz, 2014; and Lesley Viurraga, 2011.

The Eagles  came away with victories in 12 events on the afternoon.  At the start of the meet, the Green and White's lineup came up just shy in the 200 medley relay, finishing just over half a second behind Buffalo's team in 1:32.99 with Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), and Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) pacing the Eagles' lineups.

The team bounced right back with a commanding victory in the 1000 free, in which Sean Tento (Seattle, Wash.-O'Dea) knocked over 15 seconds off his personal record after besting his own mark a previous two times this season.  Tento battled for the lead back-and-forth with Buffalo's Charles Barry, but pulled ahead to a four-second margin of victory in the final 250 yards to win in 9:30.09.  Tento also finished second in the 500 free in 4:39.35 as part of a dominating performance by the Eagles in the event.  Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4), Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Homeschool), Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), and Tento established themselves in the front of the field to start the race, but Rzyski cranked it up in the second half of the race to earn a clear victory in a personal-best 4:35.68.  Following Tento in third was Lichtenberg in 4:39.66, while Burton's exhibition swim of 4:40.00 made him the fourth swimmer to touch in.

Rzyski earned another victory in the 200 fly, as the combination of competing in the event while coupled with the 500 free has been working in his favor as of late.  The Polish product led the way in 1:51.72, while Liam McKane (Sarasota, Fla.-Suncoast Polytechnical) notched a time of 1:53.49 for second and Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) finished third in a personal-best 1:54.15.  In the 100 fly, Gissen earned the win in 50.40 seconds, and Johnson picked up third in 51.51 seconds.

Bateman breezed through the backstroke races, swimming season-bests in both the 100 and 200 back.  In the 100 back, the sophomore won by more than a second in 50.05 seconds, and went on to win the 200 back by a margin of three and a half seconds in 1:49.19.

Buffalo got the best of the Eagles in the breaststroke races, with the Green and White claiming second in both the 100 and 200 breast.  However, the races marked season bests for both Aerne, Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson), and Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline).  Aerne and Fisher posted identical marks of 56.43 seconds in the 100 breast to tie for second, while Fisher finished second in the 200 breast in 2:03.25 with Hodges claiming third in 2:04.32.

Moore and Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) helped the team rack up major points in the remaining four events.  Henry won the 100 free, 200 free, and 200 IM, while Moore earned the victory in the 50 free and also finished second in the 100 free.  In the 100 free, Henry established the lead from the first turn and kept on a torrid pace to a 45.37 victory, a team season best, while Moore swam in for second in 46.09 seconds.  He had a similar race in the 200 free, taking the lead early to win in 1:38.51, another season best, and was followed by Ethan McNally (Loveland, Colo.-Loveland) in the first collegiate 200 free of his career, finishing second in 1:43.08.  Henry won one final event, cruising to a three-second victory in the 200 IM after clocking a 1:51.56, a mark identical to his previous season best.  Moore also posted an identical time to his previous best effort, swimming a 20.86 in the 50 free for the win, followed by Gissen in 21.22 seconds for runner-up.

On the springboards, the Green and White continued to showcase some of the premier divers in the MAC.  Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) earned the win in both the 1- and 3-meter dives, posting scores of 329.93 and 384.88, respectively.  On the 1-meter springboard, Dakoda Johnson (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove) finished third with 302.33 points, and Dan Gironza (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) earned the second-place finish in the 3-meter dive with 282.38 points.

Eastern had established its victory before the close of the match, choosing to swim the 400 free relay as an exhibition, as did Buffalo's A squad.  The two teams still delivered a thrilling end to the meet, as Buffalo pulled ahead of the Eagles' lineup of Gissen, Burton, Bateman, and Moore.  The lead bounced back and forth before Moore powered through the anchor leg in a blazing 44.23 seconds to give Eastern what would have been a victory in 3:04.33, more than a second and a half ahead of Buffalo.

The Eagles will be back in action next week, when they take on MAC foe Miami Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.  The meet will also be Senior Day for EMU's 10 seniors, who will be honored at the start of the meet.
