Running a hilly course plagued with soft spots and mud on a particularly humid afternoon, the Bison scored 38 points to claim the meet title, while the Eagles racked up 56 points, followed by Wayne State University with 64 points.
The Green and White was led by redshirt-freshman Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus), who finished third in his collegiate debut. The Icelandic product crossed the line in 20:28.55, less than eight seconds behind frontrunner Wayne State's Irvin Wyche. Andresson was followed by Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) with a fifth-place mark of 20:35.59.
Two more Eagles sprinted in to place in the top-15, paced by Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls) in 20:57.19 for 12th and Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) in 14th place. The meet also served as the first of Lenneman's EMU career. True freshman John Sattler (Byron Center, Mich.-Byron Center) took the fifth scoring spot for the team, finishing in 21:25.43.
Head Coach John Goodridge remarked upon the progress that he saw within the past week. "I saw a lot of very positive things today from a team perspective," noted Goodridge. "Most of our individuals accomplished what they set out to do and it was a solid team effort throughout the race. Most importantly, we gained a lot of experience that we can build on for the remainder of the season."
Coach Goodridge also commended his top-three redshirt-freshmen harriers, saying, "I'm very pleased with Hlynur's collegiate debut; he was certainly unfamiliar with the competition and I think he's going to profit from today's effort. Likewise, Abel looked much improved from last week and I was very happy with Mitch's collegiate debut. Mitch gave us a really solid effort and helped us secure our second-place finish."
The Eagles will head to East Lansing, Mich. for their next meet of the season, going up against the field at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Big Ten contender Michigan State University. The meet will be held Friday, Sept. 12, with the first race beginning at noon.
