Men's cross country heads to East Lansing for Friday meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — After placing first and second in the opening meets of the 2014 campaign, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team is gearing up to take on a much larger field at the MSU-Auto Owners-Spartan Invtitational Sponsored by Playmakers. The team will head to East Lansing, Mich. Friday, Sept. 12, for the third race of the season.
The Green and White will see harriers from 29 other institutions in the men's race, including: Albion, Alpena CC, Ashland, Central Michigan, Cleary, Concordia, Ferris State, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Hope, Jackson CC, Lake Superior State, Lansing CC, Lawrence Tech, Macomb CC, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, Mott CC, the MSU Running Club, Muskegon CC, Northwood, Oakland CC, Olivet, Saginaw Valley, Sault College, Schoolcraft College, Spring Arbor, and Wayne State.
Head Coach John Goodridge looks forward to giving more of his athletes competition experience, noting, "I will add a few more guys to the lineup this weekend as we look forward to the strongest competition yet faced this season. Our training has been going smoothly and our new guys have been making a nice adjustment to the program." Fresh faces to the squad have most certainly been making an impact after redshirt freshmen Hlynur Andresson, Abel Flores, and Mitch Lenneman served as the Eagles' top-three at the Detroit Titan Invitational, Sept. 6. One week prior, the Eagles landed five athletes running their debut race donning the Green and White in the top-10 of the Toledo Invitational, Aug. 29, paced by Wingate University transfer Steve Hammond for the runner-up finish behind veteran Eagle Nick Raymond.
A pair of collegiate races will kick off seven hours of cross country festivities at Forest Akers East Golf Course, beginning with the collegiate women at noon. Following the opening race, the Eagles will compete in an 8,000-meter course, which consists of two full loops around the East Course, at 12:30 p.m. After the two elite races, a series of high school and middle school courses will be run until the evening.
