YORKTOWN, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team used a playoff to capture the 2014 Cardinal Classic, which concluded Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 23 at the par-72, 6,164-yard course at The Players Club. EMU and Western Michigan University were tied through the regulation 36 holes at the 16-team tournament. Each team sent five players out to play a one-hole sudden death playoff. The Eagles edged the Broncos by two strokes to claim their first title of the 2014 fall season.
After shooting 298 on Monday, Eastern Michigan carded a 300 on Tuesday to end with a 598, the third lowest two-round total in school-history. WMU carded a 296 during the final round to make up four strokes and force a playoff. After the Eagles and Broncos, Bowling Green State University was a distant third (607).
In the playoff, freshman Kylie Raines' (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman)'s eagle from 130 yards out proved to be the difference in the EMU victory. Redshirt-junior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) and senior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) each tallied a par on the first hole, while freshman Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) and sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) each managed a bogey.
Overall, the victory marked the 18th title in the program's history. It is also the 14th team championship during Head Coach Sandy Wagner's 10-year tenure and the first since 2012 when the Eagles cruised to a 14-stroke victory at the Red Rocks Invitational, March 3-4. Additionally, it marks the fourth time Eastern Michigan has claimed the Cardinal Classic title, winning it in 2002, 2006 and 2009 as well.
Individually, Lee Ping finished as the runner-up with a two-day tally of 146 (73-73). The finish was the best of her career, besting a fourth-place showing at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships, April 25-27, when she posted a 226 (73-72-81). The 36-hole tally is also the best of her career as her previous two round low was a 157 (76-81) at the Red Rocks Invitational, March 2-3, 2013. WMU's Chloe Lawrie claimed medalist honors with a one-over 145 (72-73).
Schoof was the next best EMU finisher, recording her first career top 10 showing as she finished in a four-way tie for fourth place with a 149 (72-77). Beck posted a 151 (74-77) to tie for 11th while Murphy rallied after a tough opening day to climb the leaderboard with a final round 73 to take 18th at 153 (80-73). Raines placed 32nd with a 157 (79-78) and redshirt junior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman-Toledo) tied for 50th at 161 (79-82) while playing as an individual.
Eastern Michigan takes a week off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 3, at the Nittany Lion Invitational. The three-day event concludes Sunday, Oct. 5, on the Penn State Blue Course.
