Men's Track and Field to Compete in Meyo Invitational
2/6/2014 4:26:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
Eagles head to South Bend, Ind. for two-day meet
Schedule of Events
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team will travel to South Bend, Ind., where No. 19 University of Notre Dame will host its annual Meyo Invitational, Feb. 7-8. In addition to the nationally-ranked Fighting Irish, the Green and White will face six institutions ranked in the top-15 of the weekly Great Lakes Regional poll.
Eastern Michigan, who sits at seventh in the regional rankings just behind Mid-American Conference foe Kent State University, will look to use the competitive field at the Meyo Invitational in preparation for the 2014 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Head Coach John Goodridge commented that the meet is "one of the really exciting spots on the indoor circuit, and schools from around the country are represented there. Our guys are really looking forward to facing even higher levels of competition."
One of the historic features of the meet will be the "Meyo Mile," which has a long history of athletes running a sub-four minute time in the mile run. Of the five Eagles that make up the elite group of sub-four minute milers, four of those times were set in South Bend. Paul McMullen was the first Eagle to break the barrier in 1995, followed by Boaz Cheboiywo in 2003 and Jordan Desilets and Gavin Thompson in 2004. Looking to be inducted into the group is senior Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University), who missed out by just a hair when he clocked a 4:00.29 at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 9, 2013.
The meet will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 with the long jump and weight throw. Competition will conclude with the 4x400m relays, starting at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.
