SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)
—The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had a solid turnout at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 8, as nine members of the Green and White performed well enough to punch a ticket to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

In the first event for the Eagles of the afternoon, Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) ran a 4:09.75 in the mile run, clinching a runner-up finish in the event.  The race was one-of-two mile runs in the Meyo Invitational, as Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) took part in the Meyo Mile, just missing out on the revered sub-four minute mark with a 4:00.91 time that earned him fourth.

A trio of Eagles placed in the top-20 in the 400m dash, all earning spots to the MAC meet at the end of the season.  The pack was led by Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower), who came in 13th with a time of 48.38.   In the 15th spot was Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wisc.-Bradford), clocking in at a personal-best 48.40 seconds.  Rounding out the trio was Jason Ervin (Farmington Hill, Mich.-Farmington) in the 19th spot.

The Eagles had a pair of fifth-place finishes on the field, as Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) and Javion Lee (Clinton, Miss.-Clinton) matched or exceeded their personal records in their respective events.  Harris threw for a distance of 16.52 meters/54 feet 2.50-inches in the shot put, beating out his previous mark of 53-07.00 set just one week ago at the EMU Triangular, Feb. 1.  Lee took home fifth in the triple jump, as the rookie matched his personal-best mark of 14.58 meters/47 feet 10-inches.

Success continued in the sprints, as Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) continued to impress in his debut season donning the Green and White, as the freshman took sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.50.  Brown, along with Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) with a personal-best 21.99, both earned qualifying marks for the conference meet.

Wrapping up competition was the 4x400m relay team of Bolton, Ervin, Brown, and Waynes.  The quartet took fifth in the relay with a time of 3:12.46, nearly three seconds faster than the 3:15.25 mark that currently leads the conference at the EMU Triangular, Feb. 1.

The Eagles will stay in-state for the next weekend of competition, as they will make the short trip to Allendale, Mich. for the Grand Valley State University "Big Meet."  The meet will be another two-day event, spanning Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15.
