ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team took one final week of competition to prepare for the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, as the squad traveled to both the University of Michigan and Hillsdale College to tune up for the conference meet.
EMU history was made at the Hillsdale Tune-Up in Hillsdale, Mich. Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville) broke his own school record for the second time in the 2013-14 season after clearing the coveted 18-foot mark. The senior, who ranks second in the MAC and sixth in the nation, cleared a height of 5.51 meters/18 feet 1.00-inch to easily take the victory at Hillsdale, as he vaulted nearly two and a half feet higher than the runner-up. Dylan Stites (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) took third with a vault of 4.46 meters/14 feet 7.50-inches.
At the Silverston Invitational at U-M, one Eagle secured a victory for the Green and White. Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) kept on pace with his stellar season by winning the 200m dash in 21.70, well over half a second ahead of Michigan's Codie Nolan. Bolton's mark would guarantee him a spot in the 2014 MAC Championships had he not already qualified with his career-best time of 21.47 set at the EMU Triangular, Feb. 1, which ranks as the second-fastest time in the MAC for the 2013-14 season.
Performing at an impressive rate is Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) in the shot put. The sophomore has set a personal record in every meet during the 2013-14 season, and did not fail to impress as he bested his record set just one week ago at the SPIRE Invitational by a distance of four inches, throwing for 16.64 meters/54 feet 7.25-inches. The throw should rank Harris in the top-five performances in the MAC for the season, just behind Central Michigan's Alex Rose.
The squad had six Eagles finish in the top-four of their respective fields, led by Aaron Dewberry (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Northern (Grand Valley)) in the long jump. Dewberry set an EMU personal-best with a distance of 6.82 meters/22 feet 4.50-inches to finish runner-up in the event. The junior transfer was the top collegiate finisher, coming in behind unattached athlete Patrick Cochran.
Also performing well in the jumps were Chris Fischre (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) and James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St. Johns Jesuit). Fischre set a personal record in the triple jump, bounding 13.37 meters/43 feet 10.50-inches to nudge past his previous PR by one centimeter and take third in the meet. O'Shea, who has also been on a tear in setting personal-bests this season, cleared 2.00 meters/6 feet 6.75-inches in the high jump for a fourth-place finish.
Wrapping up action on the field were the weight throw athletes, led by senior captain Teron Turner (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Southfield Senior). Turner took third with an 18.62 meter/61 foot 1.25-inch launch, while Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) also nabbed a spot in the top-10 for the afternoon.
On the track, Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) took third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.42 seconds. Another third-place finish came from Jason Ervin (Farmington Hill, Mich.-Farmington) in the 400m dash, leading a pack of Eagles to a 3-4-5 finish as Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wisc.-Bradford) finished within .62 seconds of each other.
The Eagles competed in two more events on the track, as Pedro Delgado (Southfield, Mich.-Brother Rice) paced a group of six sprinters in the 60m dash with a 7.05 eighth-place finish and Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) placed in the top-five of the mile run, crossing the line at 4:19.94.
EMU's track and field squad will have less than one week in preparation before heading to Kent, Ohio to defend its title in the 2014 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 28-March 1. With 28 athletes already surpassing MAC qualifying standards and multiple Eagles in the top-five of the performance charts, the team has high hopes that its training and competition schedule will come to fruition at the conference meet.
