KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)--
Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team finished its first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, amassing 37 points in five scored events.  The Eagles sit in second at the close of the evening's events behind the University of Akron (53), but the Green and White will have ample opportunities to catch up to the Zips tomorrow, March 1.

A pair of athletes competed in four of the grueling seven events that make up the heptathlon.  Current EMU record holder Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) is currently 115 points behind Buffalo's Mike Morgan with 3,014 points, while Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) has amassed 2,725 points thus far.  Both athletes set personal-bests in the 60m dash as Ijah won the event in 7.04 seconds and Selvig took sixths with a 7.29-second finish.  Ijah won one more event, throwing 14.49 meters/47 feet 6.50-inches in the shot put.  The duo also competed in the long jump and high jump, and look forward to the 60m hurdles, a strength for both, along with the pole vault and 1000m run.

The first Eagle to put EMU on the map was senior Teron Turner (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Southfield Senior) in the weight throw.  In his final indoor meet donning the Green and White, Turner put on a personal record-breaking performance with a 19.17-meter/62-foot 10.75-inch hurl in the weight throw, which is the fourth-farthest throw in EMU history.   Turner took third behind Buffalo's Evan Palmer and Kent State's Matthias Tayala, who both rank in the top-20 nationally.

Two more events were scored on the field, as Max Babits (Howell, Mich.-Fowlerville) notched the highest field finish for the Eagles.  The senior took second in the pole vault behind defending MAC champion Shawn Barber of Kent State.  Babits cleared a height of 5.45 meters/17 feet 10.50-inches to clinch the runner-up spot.  In the long jump, freshman Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) was the only member of the squad to score, leaping for a distance of 6.97 meters/22 feet 10.50-inches.

The Eagles saw their usual success on the track, as the pair of Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville) and Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium) finished second and third, respectively, in the 5000m run.  Witchell finished in 14:28.64 while Bouchikhi turned out a personal-best 14:29.67 finish.  Though EMU did not come away with a MAC champion in the event, the Eagles scored highest in the event with 14 points, followed by Akron (10), Central Michigan (6), and Kent State (1).

The final scored event was the distance medley relay, which the Eagles dropped to the University at Buffalo in a nail-biting finish.  The team of Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey SS), Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford), Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), and Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) finished in 9:52.53, just .16 seconds behind the Bulls.

In addition to the scored events, four preliminary rounds took place on the track to establish the athletes that will compete in tomorrow's events.  The Eagles boast at least one athlete in each event, including qualification marks from three athletes in the 400m dash.  Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) paced the team with a 47.96 mark that earned him the second-fastest time in the heat.  Brown was right behind Bolton with a personal-best 48.08, and Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Farmington) nabbed the sixth spot with his own personal-best mark of 48.15.  Bolton also qualified for the 200m dash finals along with senior Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt), who ran a career-best time of 21.78 to edge his way into the championship heat.

Two Eagles will compete in the 60m hurdles, as Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) took fifth in the event and Ijah will go through a double dose of hurdles when he competes in the finals round as well as the section in the heptathlon.  The final qualifier for the day was Bradley, who ran a career-best time of 1:51.08 in the 800m to take third going into the final eight.

The hunt for the championship crown will resume tomorrow, March 1, beginning with the heptathlon 60m hurdles at 10 a.m.  Live results will be available through deltatiming.com.
