YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs earned 13 combined event wins at the third annual Bob Parks Memorial inside Bowen Field House Saturday, Jan. 24.
Faith Moore (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) won the weight throw with a personal best mark of 17.58m (57-08.25), improving from spot No. 8 to spot No. 5 in the program top 10. Mariah Taylor (East Lake, Fla./East Lake) improved her program top 10 mark in the triple jump from spot No. 9 to spot No. 7 with a personal best jump of 12.49m (40-11.75m), taking first place.
The Eagles saw a combined total of 13 personal bests, with the men winning seven events and the women winning six.
How it Happened – Men
The Eastern men earned seven event wins and seven top-three finishes. Bamidele Ajayi (Eikiti State, Nigeria/Metropolitan International College) won the 60m finals with a personal best time of 6.82, along with winning the 200m in 21.96. Michael Hawkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical/Michigan State) ran a personal best time of 8.00 to win the 60m hurdles.
The mile saw Eagles sweep the top three spots, with Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School) taking first place with a personal best time of 4:10.18. He was followed by Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix), who finished in second place with a time of 4:14.65, and Nicholas Kline (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills) ran a time of 4:22.64 to take third place.
Tanner Schick (Mount Dora, Fla./Mount Dora Christian Academy) won the high jump with a 1.95m (6-04.75) mark. Sam Vesperman (Gross Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) won the pole vault with a 4.45m (14-07.25) clearance.
Lucky Fiaku (Nimo, Nigeria/Busy International Secondary) won the triple jump with a 13.91m mark for the Eagles' seventh event win.
Leo Ignacio (Saline, Mich./Saline) earned two second place finishes, running a personal best time of 8.17 in the 60m hurdles finals, along with running a time of 22.15 in the 200m.
How it Happened – Women
The women earned six event wins and 17 top-three finishes. In addition to Taylor, Shay Clemetson (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) earned her event win in the long jump with a 5.71m leap.
Jordynn Young (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) won the 200m with a time of 25.29, while Alba Viñals Calixto (Arinsal, Andorra/Escola Andorrana de Segona Ensenyança d'Ordino) won the 400m in 56.83. Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) ran a personal best in the 800m to take first place in 2:12.81.
Contributing to the sweep of the 400m was Josephine Oloye (Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School/Tayelolu Memorial) in second place with a time of 57.91, and Liusmar Rivas Velasquez (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) running a time of 58.61 to take third.
The Eagles swept the weight throw, earning the top three spots. After Moore was followed by Aleah Johnson (Botkins, Ohio/Botkins), who earned second place with a 17.10m (56-01.25) toss, and Nicolette Lewis (Fairburn, Ga./Hoover), who threw a 16.53m (54-02.75) mark for third.
