OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)-- Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2013-14 Mid-American Conference dual slate with a decision over Miami University, extending its current MAC dual win streak to 66 consecutive victories. The Eagles topped the Redhawks, 175-125, in the final head-to-head meet of the campaign, Feb. 1. With the win, the team improves to 7-1 (3-0 MAC), while Miami falls to 4-3 (1-2 MAC).
The Eagles won 10-of-16 events en route to their victory over the RedHawks. The first victory came by way of Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnson) in the 200 free. The sophomore, who is also the incumbent MAC Swimmer of the Week, won a down-to-the-wire race in which he touched in less than half a second ahead of Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) for a 1-2 finish for the Green and White. Henry went on to take the 200 IM in his last event.
Three Eagles took a sweep of their respective events, as Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Sage Stephens (Warren, Ill.-Warren) each won two events. Bateman continued to be the lead backstroker for the squad, as the freshman touched in over a second ahead of the runner-up in the 100 back and nearly the same margin in the 200 back. His victories were immediately followed up by Fisher, who came extremely close to matching his season-bests in the 100 and 200 breast. In the 200, Fisher finished just under .2 seconds ahead of Miami's Evan Bader to take the win. Stephens led the way for the Green and White in the diving events, as the junior notched a 297.07 on the 1-meter springboard and a 311.32 in the 3-meter dive.
The 500 free was the final individual victory for the team, as Franco Petrone (Etobicoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) had the edge on freshman Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.), as he took the event in 1:38.19. Lichtenberg touched in just .13 seconds behind his teammate for the runner-up spot.
In the team's usual fashion, the Eagles finished up the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. The team of Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross), Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) and Moore finished in 3:01.61, nearly three seconds ahead of Miami's A-team.
The squad will not take much time off in preparation for the 2014 MAC Championship, as they will head to the homes of two nationally-ranked teams for a pair of invitational meets. Next weekend, the Eagles will head to Columbus, Ohio, where No. 9 Ohio State will host a two-day event, Feb. 8-9. After a short break, they will head down the road to Ann Arbor, Mich., where the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan will host the Michigan First Chance Meet, Feb. 22-23.
