COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming team sent a group of 10 athletes to compete in the Ohio State University Winter Invitational, which completed its first day of action, Feb. 8.
Claiming the highest finish of the day for Eastern was Dan Proctor (Muncie, Ind.-Muncie), whose mark of 57.87 in the 100 breast earned the junior runner-up in the event just .14 seconds behind Penn State's Harrison Grimm. Proctor also took seventh in the 400 IM with a 4:10.02 mark.
The majority of the Green and White competed in the 100 free, as seven Eagles hit the water in the finals on Saturday evening. The team was led by freshman Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park), as he missed out on a third-place finish by a slim .02 seconds behind OSU's Charlie Fry. The rookie swimmer was followed by Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston), Brad Lebling (Mason, Ohio-William Mason), Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), Miles MacDonald (Troy, Mich.-Troy), Chris Buzard (Venetia, Pa.-Peters Township) and Conner Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central).
Brinkhoff also competed in the 100 back for the squad, in which he took fifth. Placing third in the race was Nate Schingoethe (Lake Park, Ill.-Lake Park) who notched a time of 51.08 in his sole event for the day.
In the opening event for the men, Moore paced the Eagles in the 100 fly, touching in at 51.34 seconds. His performance was good for fifth, while teammate Axel Schmitter-Sanchez (Istapalapa, Mexico-Calmecac (Universidad Autonoma Metropolitina) swept in for sixth just .10 seconds behind his classmate.
The Eagles will resume competition tomorrow, Feb. 9, at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10 a.m., and live results will be available through OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
