YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team picked up its second victory of the 2014-15 campaign,  Nov. 15, handily defeating the University of Cincinnati, 191-109.  With the win, the Eagles increase their record to 2-1, while the Bearcats fall to 0-3.

The Green and White won 11-of-16 events during the co-ed competition with the women's team, and featured an additional platform dive that did not impact the team score.  During the platform diving competition, which has not occurred for the Eagles inside Jones Natatorium in the entirety of Diving Coach Buck Smith's tenure at EMU, Jordan Lesser (Bethesda, Md.-Thomas S. Wootton (Alabama-Minnesota) broke the school record with a final score of 395.85 points.  Lesser also went on to win the 3-meter dive, edging out teammate Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) by 1.13 points by recording an 8/8.5 on a forward 2.5 somersault to notch an EMU career record of 392.33.  Chan was the victor in the 1-meter dive with 333.30 points to pace Lesser, and both events were a sweep by the Eagles with Sage Stephens (Warren, Ill.-Warren) finishing third in both contests.

Along with Lesser, the Eagles had three other athletes secure double victories.  Reigning Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) won both the 200 and 500 free.  The 200 free was a 1-2 punch with teammate Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), with Henry touching in at 1:39.63 before Moore finished in 1:40.10.  The 500 free was a thrilling event, as Henry trailed Cincinnati's Chris Bready going into the final 100 yards of the race.  Clocking a final 100 split of 52.62 seconds, Henry claimed the victory over Bready in just .02 seconds.

Henry's counterpart in the 200 free, Moore, was able to win two events of his own.  Immediately preceding the intermission before the women's 3-meter diving competition, Moore recorded a personal best in the 50 free at 20.86 seconds, nearly a tenth of a second faster than his previous mark.  The Eagles delivered another first-second combo in the 50 free, with Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) clocking in at 21.19 seconds.  Following the diving break, Moore hopped back in the water to win the 100 free in 46.42 seconds.

The final Eagle to win multiple events was Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson).  Bateman dominated the backstroke events, winning the 100 back by nearly two seconds in 50.90 and had a similar margin of victory in the 200 back, touching in at 1:50.82.

Also picking up individual wins for the squad were Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) in the long distance breaststroke and butterfly races.  Fisher finished the 200 breast in 2:05.75, securing the win ahead of teammate Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) by just under half a second.  In the 200 fly, Rzyski was the clear winner in 1:50.95, pacing a career-best performance by Liam McKane (Sarasota, Fla.-Suncoast Polytechnical) of 1:52.51 for second place.

The team continued to see strong times despite surrendering a victory in the rest of the individual events.  In the 1000 free, Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Homeschool) recorded a personal best of 9:35.14 to finish second behind Bready.  Runner-up finishes also came from Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community) in the 100 breast and Gissen in the 100 fly, while McKane took third in the 400 IM in 4:08.75.

Eastern was able to begin and end the meet with victories as well, as Bateman, Aerne, Gilski, and Gissen won the 200 medley relay in 1:32.77 and the lineup of Gissen, Bateman, Henry, and Moore capped off the competition with a 3:04.23 win in the 400 free relay.

The Eagles will take a short break before resuming competition with the annual EMU Invitational, Dec. 5-6, to close out the calendar year.
