—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team secured its first victory of 2015 when it took down Wayne State University, 194-105, Jan. 17.  The Eagles advance to 3-1 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 2-3.

Eastern won 11-of-16 events throughout the day, with three Eagles claiming two individual victories.  The meet kicked off with the 200 medley relay, in which Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), and Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) finished runner-up in 1:33.33.

The Eagles saw the most success in the freestyle events, winning each of the five races throughout the day.  Moore claimed the top spot in the 50 free, touching in at 21.01 to pace the field, and Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) rattled off two victories in the 100 and 200 free.  Henry won the 100 free by nearly a second, finishing in 46.42 seconds while Gissen claimed second in 47.31 seconds.  The pair also turned in a 1-2 finish in the 200 free, with Henry garnering the win in 1:40.49 and Gissen sliding into second in 1:43.76 while Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Homeschool) completed a sweep of the event in 1:45.93.

In the distance freestyle races, Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) earned the win in the 500 free in 4:41.03 and was followed by Lichtenberg in 4:44.96 for the runner-up spot.  The 1000 free was won by Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) in his collegiate debut in the event, clocking in at 9:41.37 for a 15-second margin of victory.

Rzyski also picked up a win in the 200 fly, finishing more than three seconds ahead of the field in 1:52.04.  The Eagles enjoyed another sweep, as Liam McKane (Sarasota, Fla.-Suncoast Polytechnical) touched in second and Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) finished third.  Johnson later paced the Eagles in the 100 fly, finishing in 50.99 seconds and was followed immediately by the brother duo of Brian and Kevin Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek).

Bateman paced the team in both the backstroke races, winning the 200 back in 1:52.24 but dropping a tight decision in the 100 back after finishing in 51.30.  Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) claimed runner-up in the 200 back in 1:54.59, while his mark of 53.46 in the 100 back was good for third.

A similar result was seen in the breaststroke events, with Fisher winning the 200 breast in 2:11.54 but finishing second in the 100 breast in 57.66 after All-American performer Piotr Jachowicz.  The WSU standout later claimed another win in the 200 IM, an event in which he had held the Division II national record, touching in less than a second ahead of Gissen.  Gissen claimed runner-up in 1:56.53, while McKane claimed third in 1:57.43 and Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) finished fourth in 1:59.61.

On the springboards, Dan Gironza (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) picked up victories in both the 1- and 3-meter dives.  The sophomore won the 1-meter dive by more than 20 points, scoring 305.77 points for the victory, and dominated the 3-meter dive with a 344.41-point performance to win by more than 60 points.

The Eagles capped off the race with one last victory, squeaking past WSU in the 400 free relay by six-hundredths of a second.  B. Moore, Henry, Bateman, and Rodolfo Flores (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) secured the win in 3:09.48 to claim the win over the Warriors.

Eastern will return to Jones Natatorium for a Mid-American Conference tangle with the University at Buffalo Bulls.  The meet is slated to start Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
