Eagles will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 14

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team has made leaps and bounds in its progress throughout the 2014 campaign, and will put its training to the test Friday, Nov. 14, when the Eagles compete in the 2014 NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis.

The Eagles are two weeks off the best conference finish since 1991 after finishing runner-up at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship, Nov. 1.  The Green and White finished 11 points behind No. 27 Toledo, but as Head Coach Sue Parks remarked following the race, "It was a strong race for us, but we feel like we have an even better one in us."

The team will surely need a strong performance to make an impact at the regional meet, as the Great Lakes Region is one of the fiercest in the nation.  The Eagles are ranked ninth in the region, and six programs are ranked in the top-30 nationally.  Michigan State recently moved into the premier spot in the country, followed by No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 8 Michigan, No. 19 Ohio State, No. 27 Toledo, and No. 29 Notre Dame.  Also receiving votes in the latest national poll were Indiana and Butler.

Only two programs are guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championship, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.  The Eagles will look to 2014 MAC Champion Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) for leadership on the course, as Voronko will also be making a bid to return individually at the NCAA Championship for her final season.  Joining the Russian senior in hopes of a national appearance are Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison).  Gallein finished third at the MAC Championship, just seven seconds behind Voronko, and McDermitt took ninth.

The women's 6,000-meter race is slated to start at noon at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.  Live results will be provided through uwbadgers.com.
