Voronko and Gallein Finish in Top-15 at NCAA Great Lakes Regional

MADISON, Wis. (EMUEagles.com)— Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team turned in its best team finish since 1996, finishing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 14. The Eagles scored 202 points to move up four places from last year's finish.
No. 1 Michigan State University handily won the regional meet with 28 points, thanks to a 1-2 finish from Leah O'Connor and Rachele Schulist in 19:45 for the 6,000-meter course.
The Eagles were paced by Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) , who finished 10th and 11th , respectively. Voronko crossed the line at 20:16, while Gallein was just one second behind her in 20:17. Voronko finished 22 seconds faster than her time from last season, and Gallein was over 1:10 faster than EMU's second scorer a season ago.
Following the international duo of Voronko and Gallein was freshman Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) in 20:58 for 36th . The final two Eagles to score were Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) and Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline) in 21:37 and 21:44, respectively.
Two more members of the Green and White competed in Madison, as Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) finished in 22:49 and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) recorded a time of 23:02.
The team will await the results of the rest of the nationwide regional meets to see if any members will qualify for the NCAA Championship, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
