International duo were the top finishers from the MAC at Great Lakes Regional
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The NCAA announced its full list of automatic qualifiers and at-large bids for the NCAA Cross Country Championship, and Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team landed two individual qualifiers on the list of athletes that will be competing in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 22.
The international pair of Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) earned their bids to the national championship with their 10-11 finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 14. Voronko moved up four finishes from her performance last year, and cut over 20 seconds off her mark on the 6,000-meter course after crossing the line in 20:16. Gallein was close behind Voronko in 20:17, as the two were the top finishers from the Mid-American Conference.
The MAC will be heavily represented on the national stage this year, as Western Michigan's Maria McDaniel and Central Michigan's Abbey Kelto also earned indvidual appearances, while No. 26 Toledo received an at-large bid as a team. Additionally, Eastern Michigan was very much in the hunt for an at-large bid, falling just seven points behind at-large qualifier Notre Dame.
With two athletes going to the NCAA Championship, EMU's women's cross country program is making its mark in program history. The entire squad made a championship appearance in 1996, but the Green and White has previously ever only sent one individual qualifier to the NCAA Championship. Voronko made the trek to Terre Haute last season and just missed out on All-American honors after finishing 45th, and will look to cap off her senior season with a strong finish while Gallein will be making her debut on the national stage.
The women's championship race will begin at noon, and a live webcast will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
