Freshman will represent EMU gymnastics on the floor exercise
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Freshman gymnast Khadijah Hudson (Hebron, Ky. – Conner) will represent the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team at the NCAA Regional Championships, becoming the first Eagle to qualify since the 2011 season. Hudson will compete on the floor exercise in the Tuscaloosa Regional, taking place at Coleman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Alabama, April 6, at 6 p.m.
“Khadijah has been a dymnamic freshman, competing in at least two to four events all season long,” noted EMU Associate Head Gymnastics Coach Andrea Siik. “She has been very impactful on the success of the team this year due to her athleticism. We, as a coaching staff, are extremely proud of her representing EMU gymnastics at regionals this weekend.”
The stellar collegiate debut season continues for Hudson as she becomes the first gymnast to qualify for NCAA regional competition since Nikole Viltz back in 2011. Hudson is also the first freshman and first gymnast to qualify on floor since Kaylyn Millick accomplished both of those feats during the 2010 season.
Hudson qualifies as the individual event specialist on the floor with a Regional Qualifying Score of 9.845. “One event Khadijah has really shined on is floor, and she has been dominant in every meet. She anchored that event, something that is very hard to do as a freshman,” mentioned Coach Siik.
Throughout the year, she averaged a 9.833 from the judges, including career highs of 9.875 on three separate occasions, most recently at the MAC Championships, March 23. The impressive score is the 10th highest in EMU history, and the All-MAC Second Team honoree also recorded the mark in an individual victory at the Eagle Invitational, March 9, as well as a third-place finish at Southeast Missouri State, March 3.
Along with being named second team All-MAC this season, the Hebron, Ky. native also has two MAC weekly awards on the season as she was named Gymnast of the Week for the period ending, March 3, for her career day against Southeast Missouri State, along with being recognized as Specialist of the Week, Jan. 23, for her performance in the season opener against Western Michigan, Jan. 19, where she recorded a runner-up score of 9.800 on the floor in her first appearance for the Green and White.
Hudson will look to secure a spot at the NCAA National Championships in Los Angeles, April 19-21. Due to not being on a qualifying team or participating in the all-around competition, she must win the floor exercise in order to qualify for nationals.
Joining Eagle All-Access for another edition of Gymnastics Weekly, Hudson discusses her freshman campaign as well as her preparation for the regional meet.
