YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 26-28, at The Longaberger Golf and Country Club in Nashport, Ohio. The three-day event will be played to a par-72 for the nine MAC schools which sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan.
EMU is scheduled to tee off Friday, April 26, at 9:30 a.m. and will be paired with Northern Illinois and Ball State University.
Longaberger Golf Club, which opened in 1999 and was designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills. The course is defined by panoramic natural beauty, rolling hills and immaculate playing conditions. Among the most dramatic holes on Longaberger's 7,243-yard parkland-style layout is the par-5, No. 4 that plays 565 yards from the tees with a 150-foot elevation drop from tee to green.
Although Ohio University is hosting the tournament, it is the Eagles who should be excited about the location. The MAC Preview was played at Longaberger's on Oct. 16, and the Green and White had an excellent showing, with Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) and Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) both finishing in the top 10, and placing third as a team only tallying mere four more strokes than the winning Ball State.
Back in 2011, the last time the MAC Championship was played at the Nashport, Ohio course, the Eagles and Johnson both had fantastic outings. The Eagles took second overall and Johnson shot a 216 to win the event, becoming the first EMU player to capture the individual medalist honors since the program began in the 1996-97 campaign.
At last year's MAC Championship, Eastern Michigan University finished in fourth place with a three-day cumulative score of 951 (310-325-316). Kent State captured its 14th consecutive league title, finishing at 44-over par 908 (301-307-300) on the par 72, 6,127 yard Hawthorns Golf & Country Club course in Fisher, Indiana. EMU senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) finished in seventh place with a 14-over 230 (73-80-77) while Johnson tied for 11th with a 236 (79-80-77).
The winner of the 2013 MAC Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA regional round, May 9-11, at one of the three regional locations to be determined.
