Eagles go for series split Sunday at 11 a.m. central time
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came up empty by scores of 5-4 and 8-0 in a doubleheader against Kansas University at QuikTrip Park Saturday, March 2. The Eagles are now 2-7 on the season, while the Jayhawks move to 6-4.
Game one went 10 innings with Kansas coming up a 5-4 winner. The Eagles tied the game on a bases-loaded walk to Daniel Russell in the ninth, but aggressive Jayhawks' baserunning led to an error which allowed the winning run to score.
Eastern Michigan was limited to just one hit through the first six innings in the second game as Kansas starter Thomas Taylor went distance in an 8-0 Jayhawks' victory.
Saturday marked the Eagles' third doubleheader of the season. They fell to 1-5 on the season when playing two games on one day.
The conclusion of this four-game series is slated for Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. central time.
Game One
The Green and White held a 3-1 edge until Kansas scraped together three runs in the seventh to take a slim 4-3 lead. Patience at the plate in the ninth resulted in three walks and a hit batsman and allowed the Eagles to tie the game at four and send it to extra innings.
Kansas kept Eastern Michigan off the scoreboard in the 10th and won it when a double steal resulted in a botched attempt to catch the baserunner, Jordan Dreiling, taking third base.
After struggling in his first start last weekend, starter Brian Hill put together a solid performance on the bump against the Jayhawks. Hill struck out seven and walked just one over six innings. He gave up two earned runs and five hits.
Joe Battistelli (0-1) recorded the loss despite Kansas' winning run being unearned. He pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up a hit, a walk and striking out one.
Sam Ott's bat remained hot in Saturday's opener in a 2-for-4 game. He also posted two RBI on a single in the seventh. Daniel Russell (1-for-4) and Jamie Simpson (1-for-3) posted the other two RBI for EMU.
Jordan Piche (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Kansas after two innings of relief work. Starter Wes Benjamin tossed seven innings of three-run, seven-hit baseball en route to a no-decision. The Jayhawks had four players with multiple-hit games including leadoff hitter Dakota Smith, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
EMU opened the scoring in the second inning when Simpson sent a one-out single to left field to score Adam Sonabend. Hill retired eight straight batters until Tucker Tharp singled with one out in the fifth. Tharp came around to score later in the inning on a Tommy Mirabelli sacrifice fly to tie the game, 1-1.
Russell and John Rubino combined for back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the sixth. Russell took third on Rubino's single and Rubino scooted over to second as Kansas tried to nab the speedy Russell on his way to third. EMU's heads-up baserunning paid off as Ott drove them both home with a single to center to make it 3-1.
Hill was pulled form the game after allowing a lead-off double in the seventh. Brian Valente came on in relief, but Kansas scored three times before the inning ended and jumped ahead, 4-3. Marcus Wheeler singled in Kansas' first run, Smith poked a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the score and Justin Protacio hit the go-ahead knock to right with two out.
Down to their final three outs, the Eagles got their first two hitters aboard as Sonabend was plunked and Simpson walked. Marquise Gill then bunted the runners over to second and third before Tony DiLeo was also issued a free pass to load the bases.
Russell did not have to lift the bat off his shoulders to earn an RBI as Robert Kahana walked the senior center fielder on four pitches. That tied the game, 4-4.
Battistelli recorded the first out in the bottom of the 10th, but Dreiling walked and Alex DeLeon was hit to put a pair on base. Dreiling then broke for third base and DeLeon for second. Sonabend's throw down to third was misplayed by Gill, allowing Dreiling to cruise home and win it for KU.
Game Two
Saturday's second game featured shutdown pitching from Thomas (1-0) and a potent Kansas lineup that touched up EMU starter Ryan Lavoie (0-2) for five earned runs over 3.2 innings. The Jayhawks struck for three more scores in an 8-0 victory.
Thomas pitched a complete game and scattered just three hits while fanning eight batters and walking three. Sonabend (2-for-2) and Simpson (1-for-2) were the only two EMU hitters to solve Thomas.
KU's three-hole hitter, Dreiling, was once again the top playmaker for the home team, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a trio of runs scored.
Kansas took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles from DeLeon and Tharp. That lead grew to 6-0 with a four-spot in the fourth. With a run already across, Michael Marsinek came on in relief of Lavoie, but failed to hold the KU baserunners. Three of the runs were charged to Lavoie and one to Marsinek.
Single runs in the fifth and sixth innings made it an 8-0 game. EMU had just one hit through six innings and was unable to scrape any offense together save for two hits in the seventh.
