YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team will have to veer off course a bit from its originally-scheduled trip to Lawrence, Kan. for the Millard Management Jayhawk Classic. Snowy conditions have forced the Eagles (1-5) to head south to Grand Prairie, Texas to take on Kansas University (4-3) in a four-game set at QuikTrip Park Friday-Sunday, March 1-3. Friday's action begins a noon CT, while a Saturday doubleheader commences at noon and Sunday's finale is slated for 11 a.m.

The Eagles and Jayhawks were initially slated to play just once in Lawrence. The University of Iowa was also originally scheduled to participate in the event, but dropped out as a result of the move down to Texas.

ALL TIME AGAINST KANSAS: Eastern Michigan is 4-5 all-time versus the Jayhawks. EMU and Kansas last squared off in 2011, when the Green and White won the last two games of a three-game set, March 11-13. The last time out versus Iowa was March 5, 1994, when the Hawkeyes handed the Eagles a 9-5 setback.

BIG BOPPERS: The Jayhawks have hit .333 this season while averaging nearly seven runs and 13 hits per game. In victories, they have outscored their opponents, 35-13.

WHERE IS GRAND PRAIRIE?: Grand Prairie is home of the 2011 American Association League Champion AirHogs, who play out of QuikTrip Park. The facility seats 5,445 fans for baseball and is 330 feet down the lines and 390 feet to center. QuikTrip Park was also home to the Lingerie Football League's Dallas Desire until the team folded in 2012.

The city of Grand Prairie is situated inside the Dallas Metroplex between Dallas and Arlington.

A WEEKEND TO FORGET: The Eagles' trip to Pullman, Wash., Feb. 23-24, was one to forget for several reasons. EMU lost all four games to Washington State and was outscored by an 18-run margin, 34-16. On top of that, game-time wind chills were typically at or below freezing.

The series consisted of two doubleheaders. On Saturday, a five-run third inning lifted WSU to an 8-4 vicotry. In game two, Kendall Lewis pitched seven scoreless innings, but the Cougars hit a walk-off double to snatch a 1-0 win.

On Sunday, a Jamie Simpson three-run homer gave the Eagles a 10-9 lead in the seventh inning of game one, but WSU scored four times in the eighth for a 13-10 win. EMU pitching allowed 10 walks and sloppy defense resulted in four unearned runs as the Cougars managed the sweep with a 12-2 win in the finale.

NEW FACES MAKING AN IMPACT: Through six games this season, Head Coach Jay Alexander has used nine players either in their freshman season or competing for the first time in an EMU uniform. Among those players was senior Brian Hill made his first appearance on the hill Saturday, Feb. 23, after transferring to Eastern Michigan for the 2011 season. Freshman infielder Mitchell McGeein also notched his first-career homer against the Cougars.

MIDDLE MEN: The middle of EMU's lineup has made the lives of opposing pitchers miserable so far this season, as hitters three through five have produced at a .327 clip and have accounted for 12 RBI and five extra base hits. Most of these offensive contributions have come from Sam Ott (.304 batting average), Lee Longo (.320) and Adam Sonabend (.375).

CONTINUING THE TRIPLE TREND: EMU was among the top teams in the nation with 21 triples in 2012. The Eagles' knack for hitting the three-bagger has continued in six games this year, as the squad has notched four and would be on pace to hit 37 at the conclusion of the 56-game slate. Daniel Russell recorded his first triple of the year and the 12th of his career against the Cougars to move him into seventh place in EMU history.

PUT YOUR HANDS UP IN THE ERROR: Making the transition from indoor practices to game-day situations is not always easy, just ask the EMU defense. Through six games, the Eagles have committed 13 errors for a .940 fielding percentage. The squad went through the same transitional phase last season before finishing the season strongly at a .959 defensive clip.
