Gymnastics Travels to Central Michigan for MAC Match Up

EMU to face in-state rival in final meet before the MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will head up north to face Central Michigan University, March 16, in the final Mid-American Conference meet before the conference championships. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Eagles will search for its first conference win of the season, currently sporting a record of 5-9 and 0-5 in MAC tilts on the 2013 campaign.

EAGLE INVITATIONAL RECAP: EMU finished runner-up as host of the Eagle Invitational in the final home meet of the year at Bowen Field House, March 9, with a score of 194.575. Mid-American Conference foe Kent State University took the team title, tallying 195.050. Finishing behind the Eagles and Golden Flashes were the Air Force Academy (191.975) and the University of Alaska Anchorage (191.650) in third and fourth place, respectively. Sophomore Anna Willette won on the vault with a mark of 9.850 while teammates Khadijah Hudson and Paulina Miller tied for first on the floor exercise as the judges awarded them scores of 9.875.
FINDING SUCCESS ON THE FLOOR: The Green and White finished strong in front of its home crowd on the final rotation at the Eagle Invitational. Five of the six Eagles recorded career-highs on the floor. Paulina Miller and Khadijah Hudson tied for first with personal-bests 9.875 marks while seniors Amanda Fuller and Kristina Kurkmilis tied for fifth, recording career-high scores of 9.850 in their final meet inside Bowen Field House. Chantelle Loehner took seventh with a personal-best 9.825 to round out a season-high49.275 score for the Eagles.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS: Central Michigan, the reigning MAC champions, enters the final conference meet of the season posting a record of 10-4, including 3-2 in MAC play. Three of those victories came, Feb. 2, when CMU and EMU combined their scores to win the Michigan/Illinois Challenge over Illinois State University and the University of Illinois-Chicago. The Chippewas are coming off of a 195.725-191.775 victory over Alaska Anchorage, March 7.
PREVIOUS HISTORY AGAINST CENTRAL MICHIGAN: As mentioned in the previous note, the Eagles and Chippewas have already competed at the Michigan/Illinois Challenge this year with CMU tallying 195.875 and EMU recording 192.850. Eastern is looking for its first win against Central since defeating the Chippewas in both the conference championship and the regular season in 2008. On Jan. 26, 2008, the Eagles defeated CMU, 193.050-189.325, before edging their in-state rival, 193.800-193.675, at the MAC Championships, March 29, 2008, to place second in the conference meet while Central took third.
MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE HORIZON: The Eagles will end their 2013 campaign with a trip to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the MAC Championships, March 23. EMU will compete against six other MAC schools in hopes improving on its fifth-place finish last year and capturing the team's first conference crown since 2007.
