EMU Gymnastics will face Ball State and host Bowling Green in tri-meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After its longest road trip of the season to Anchorage, Alaska, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will travel south to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on host Bowling Green State University and Ball State University at the Bowling Green Invitational inside Anderson Arena, Feb. 23. The tri-meet between the three Mid-American Conference schools will begin at 4 p.m.
SEEKING REVENGE: The Eagles (2-5, 0-3 MAC) enter Saturday's meet, an invitational that does not count towards the teams' conference record, looking for redemption after a couple of narrow losses to both BGSU and BSU earlier in the season. On Jan. 26, EMU dropped its home opener, 194.025-193.900, to the Falcons as BGSU recorded its highest team score in four years. Two weeks later, Ball State escaped with a victory at Bowen Field House, 194.075-193.975, on Senior Night, Feb. 9. Although EMU has faced both opponents this year, Ball State and Bowling Green will be competing against each other for the first time in 2013.
4,000 MILES AND A “W”: Nearly 4,000 miles away from home and a four hour time difference proved to be non-factors as EMU defeated the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 193.350-192.850, at Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Feb. 17. Anna Willette led the Eagles in all three events she competed in during the meet. The Pylesville, Md. native tied career-highs on the vault with a 9.875 as well as a 9.825 on the balance beam to take first-place in both events. Willette also paced EMU on the uneven parallel bars, finishing runner-up with a mark of 9.750. For the first time this season, EMU had a gymnast compete in every event as Khadijah Hudson won the all around competition with a score of 38.600. The freshman claimed victory in the floor exercise after tying her personal-best mark of 9.850. A career-high 9.725 on the bars along with a 9.800 on the vault was good enough for a pair of third place finishes.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS: Bowling Green will entertain EMU and Ball State after finishing sixth at the Sweetheart Invitational in Raleigh, N.C., Feb. 16. In the meet, BGSU recorded a team score of 193.300. The Falcons sport a 2-9 record on the season, including 1-2 in MAC play.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: Ball State enters the Bowling Green Invitational coming off its first setback in conference play, a 194.200-193.275 home loss against Western Michigan University, Feb. 15. The Cardinals are 5-3 on the 2013 campaign, holding a 3-1 record in the MAC.
EAGLES DOUBLE DIP NEXT WEEKEND: For the first time this season, the EMU gymnasts will hit the road for a pair of dual meets next weekend. First on the schedule, the Green and White will tangle with Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill., March 2, in search of its first conference victory of the season. The Eagles will then travel south for a Sunday afternoon tilt against Southeast Missouri State University, March 3, in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
