Anna Willette leads EMU in three-of-four events
Results
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (EMUEagles.com) – Nearly 4,000 miles away from home and a four hour time difference proved to be non-factors as the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 193.350-192.850, at Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Feb. 17.
The Eagles (2-5) trailed to start the meet as UAA (4-5) recorded a 48.500 on the vault while EMU tallied 48.375 on the bars. However, the Green and White claimed the lead after an impressive 48.800 on the vault as the Seawolves could only muster 48.100 on the bars. In the third wave, Eastern competed on the floor, increasing its lead to 145.900-145.125, and the host team could not mount a comeback on the final wave, giving EMU its second victory of the season.
Sophomore Anna Willette led the Eagles in all three events she competed in during the meet. The Pylesville, Md. native tied career-highs on the vault with a 9.875 as well as a 9.825 on the balance beam to take first-place in both events. Willette also paced EMU on the uneven parallel bars, finishing runner-up with a mark of 9.750.
For the first time this season, EMU had a gymnast compete in every event as Khadijah Hudson won the all around competition with a score of 38.600. The freshman claimed victory in the floor exercise after tying her personal-best mark of 9.850. A career-high 9.725 on the bars along with a 9.800 on the vault was good enough for a pair of third place finishes.
While the vault provided the best team score for EMU, the Eagles swept the top five spots on the floor. After Hudson's 9.850, seniors Amanda Fuller and Kristina Kurkmilis finished second and third, tallying 9.800 and 9.750, respectively. Junior Chantelle Loehner placed fourth, tying her personal-best with a 9.725, and Paulina Miller's mark of 9.600 positioned her in fifth place.
The EMU gymnasts will return to action Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Bowling Green Invitational to take on conference foes Bowling Green State University and Ball State University for both the second time this season. The meet will begin at 4 p.m.
