EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)
-- Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team competed in its first matchup of the 2013-14 campaign on Oct. 18.  Though the event was not scored, the Eagles had several strong performances against Big Ten Conference member Northwestern University.

The Eagles landed at least one swimmer in the top-four in each of the freestyle events.  Junior Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) nabbed a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.64, and sophomore Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) came in less than two seconds later to claim third in the race.  Moore also claimed a winning finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a 46.37 mark.  In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) clinched third-place honors.  In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Franco Petrone (Etobiocoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) and freshman Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) both touched in at 4:41.34 to tie for fourth-place.  Lichtenberg also turned out a third-place performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Freshman Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) had a strong debut for the Green and White as he led the Eagles in both backstroke events, claiming third-place in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke.

Continuing with the trend of successful rookie debuts, freshman Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community) was the second swimmer to touch the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Sophomore Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) swept the butterfly events, touching in at 50.23 and 1:51.79 in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly.  In the 100, junior Oded Ivry (Haifa, Israel-The Hebrew Reali School) and sophomore Blake Howe (Lansing, Mich.-Everett) completed the top-three for the event.

The Eagles also took a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard individual medley.  Henry set the pace with 1:55.13, and freshman Ethan McNally (Loveland, Colo.-Loveland) and junior Sean Tento (Seattle, Wash.-O'Dea) came in shortly after.

As is usual for the Green and White, the relay teams showed strength and swept the competition, led by the team of Moore, Ivry, Gissen, and senior Gus Everson (Sandusky,Ohio-Sandusky) with a final time of 3:09.80.

The diving team had an equally impressive showing in their first competition of the year.  Eastern claimed the top-three spots in the 3-meter springboard, led by junior Dakoda Johnson (Greenwod, Ind.-Center Grove) with 292.65 points.

The squad will take a substantial break before resuming competition Saturday, Nov. 9, when they will square off against in-state foe Oakland University.  The meet will be held in Jones Natatorium and will begin at 1 p.m.
