Women’s track and field faces off against Akron and Buffalo

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –  The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team returns to action, ringing in the 2013 calendar year to face the University of Akron and the University at Buffalo inside venerable Bowen Field House Friday, Jan. 11. The scored team competition begins with field events at 4 p.m. followed by running events at 6 p.m.  Admission is free to the public.

“We are pleased to kick off 2013 with a home competition against two MAC rivals,” noted EMU women's track and field Head Coach Sue Parks. “Our athletes always get excited for scored meets, so we expect some quality performances in all areas.”

If EMU's opening victory at the Eagle Holiday Meet was any indication of how the Eagles will perform Friday, then Coach Parks has reason for having high expectations. As host of the five team invitational, the Green and White took first by winning seven events, including four coming via freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

Freshman Brittany Crew took first in the home meet by shattering the school record in the shot put with a toss of 15.58 meters. The previous school record was 14.50 meters by Tammy Stall in 1990. Another school record was nearly broken that evening as Tatijana Jacobson leaped 1.83 meters to win the high jump. Jacobson was only 0.02 meters away from the EMU record set by Ellie Hayden back in 1982.

With Bowen Field House selected as the site of this year's MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 22-23, the EMU Triangular will serve as a preview of Bob Parks Track for both Akron and Buffalo.

Scouting the Zips: Akron begins its 2013 season in Ypsilanti coming off an eighth-place finish as hosts of last year's MAC Indoor Championships. Junior Brittany Funk will be back for the Zips after placing third in the weight throw at the conference championship.

Scouting the Bulls: Emma Siuciak returns for Buffalo after an impressive freshman campaign that included a high jump victory and a runner-up finish in the pentathlon at the MAC Indoor Championships. As a team, the Bulls finished fourth at the conference meet. The EMU Triangular will serve as Buffalo's first meet of the indoor track season.
