YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Following a brief two-game road stint in San Antonio, Texas, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team returns back to the Wolverine State for a 4 p.m. home match against IUPUI Friday, Sept. 7, at Scicluna Field. The weekend wraps up with a short trip to East Lansing to take on Michigan State University Sunday, Sept. 9, at noon.
The Eagles (2-2-1) have just three games remaining on their non-conference schedule, with the University of Detroit representing the final non-MAC opponent, Sept. 13, before the 11-game MAC slate begins, Sept. 21.
JAG-GED EDGES: The Green and White owns an all-time record of 6-3-2 against the IUPUI Jaguars dating back to the 1998 campaign. Last season, the Jaguars got the best of the Eagles with a goal in the second overtime to edge out a 2-1 victory and keep EMU winless on the season. Angela Vultaggio scored the lone goal for EMU in that contest.
IUPUI enters the game scuffling, having won just one of its first six games this season.
THE OTHER GREEN TEAM: A pair of “Green and Whites” will face off Sunday at noon when the Eagles travel upstate to East Lansing to take on the Spartans. EMU has beaten MSU just once, with the Spartans holding an all-time series advantage of 9-1-3. The two squads met last season for an exhibition matchup, Aug. 13, 2011, when the Spartans walked away with a 1-0 win at Scicluna Field.
This week, Michigan State travels to Oakland University before the Eagles come calling Sunday.
EAGLES SPLIT AT UTSA CLASSIC: The Eagles braved temperatures near the 100-degree mark and overcame a sweltering turf field to post a 1-1 record at the UTSA Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. EMU bounced back from a 2-1 loss to host UTSA Friday to take a 3-1 victory over Lamar University Sunday.
On Friday, the Eagles raced out to a 1-0 lead within the first 15 minutes when junior Stephanie Clarke notched her sixth-career tally in the 13th minute. Sophomore Marisa Kozikowski's helper on the goal was her first-career point.
EMU's lead did not last long past halftime as Maria Rojas scored goals in the 46th and 51st minutes for the Roadrunners to give them the lead and the victory, 2-1.
After coming a crossbar shy of notching her first goal of the season, sophomore Cara Cutaia punched home the game's first tally Sunday against Lamar.
Sophomore Bianca Rossi then scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 38th minute, and freshman Sarah Deakin added her second of the season to make it a 3-0 game in the 65th minute.
Cutaia also posted an assist in the contest, giving her four points for the weekend. Kozikowski was also credited with a helper for her second point in as many games.
SHARE THE WEALTH: Eastern Michigan has nine players with at least one point this season. Sophomore forwards Bianca Rossi and Angela Vultaggio lead the way with eight and seven, respectively. Junior Cara Cutaia's five points lead all midfielders, while senior Jessica Thomas anchors the back end with two point.
THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE: Just five games in to the 2012 season, it is evident that this year's Eagles squad is vastly improved from last season's version. EMU is outscoring opponents, 9-8, in 2012 after five contests, while that ratio sat at 4-11 in favor of the opponent in 2011.
The Green and White secured its second win of the year on Sept. 2 this season. In comparison, it took the 2011 squad until Oct. 14 to accomplish the same thing. Finally, EMU has racked up 33 total points (nine goals, 15 assists) so far this year. The 2011 Eagles registered just 50 points during their entire 18-game schedule.
TWO WEEKS AWAY: The 2012 Mid-American Conference season gets underway Friday, Sept. 21, when the Eagles trek to DeKalb, Ill. to take on Northern Illinois University. EMU will finish the weekend Sunday, Sept. 23, at the defending MAC Tournament Champion University of Toledo.
The Green and White will be in search of their first MAC Tournament title since 1999 and their first regular season championship since 2003. A West Division championship would be a first for EMU since the two-division format was introduced in the 2010 season.
Fourteenth-year Head Coach Scott Hall's squad will also look to wipe away last season's conference record of 3-7-1, which was good for fifth place in the West Division.
