Warner Tied for Second Place at the MAC Championships

FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) fired a 73 in the first round for a second place tie at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship. As a team, the Eagles are in fourth place after 18 holes of play on the par 72, 6,127 yard Hawthorns Golf & Country Club course, compiling a team score of 310 in the nine team field.

Warner struggled during the opening nine holes, recording three bogies for a three-over 39. However, she followed that up with birdies on No. 10, 12 and 14 before adding a bogey on No. 11 to finish with a one-over 73.

Kent State's Shamira Marshall holds the 18-hole individual lead after shooting an even-par round of 72.  EMU's Shannon Warner and Ball State's Katie Windlan are tied for second at one-over par.  Piyathida Chaiyapan (Toledo), Jenna Hague (Ball State) and Georgina Hunt (Toledo) round out the top five, each tied for fourth at two-over par.

For just the third time in MAC Championship history, there is a team name atop the leader board after day one that is not Kent State.  Ball State, carded a team score of 298 to hold a three shot lead of KSU (301) and a six stroke lead over Toledo (304). Rounding out the tournament, Akron is in fifth place with a score of 316, followed by Western Michigan (321), Northern Illinois (333), Ohio (334) and Bowling Green (341).

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 15, as Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central)Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School), Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) are all tied for 15th place with a 79.

The second round of the 2012 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, April 29, at 8:30 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com.
