Women's Golf in Fifth at MAC Championship

FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- After a rain-soaked morning, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished Saturday, April 27, in fifth place with a 635 (310-325) heading into the final day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships. Meanwhile, senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) is in a tie for fourth place on the par 72, 6,127 yard Hawthorns Golf & Country Club course, compiling a two-day mark of 153 (73-80).

There was a back and forth battle atop the team standings and like the past 13 championships, Kent State University emerged as the top team heading into the final day after carding a team score of 307.  The Golden Flashes are five strokes ahead of the University Toledo, which leap frogged Ball State University from third to second place on Saturday. Rounding out the tournament, the University of Akron is in fifth place with a score of 635, followed by EMU, Western Michigan University (645), Ohio University (663), Bowling Green State University (670) and Northern Illinois (674).

Toledo's Piyathida Chhaiyapan is the day two leader after carding an even-par 72 to lead the field with a two-round score of 146.  She is three strokes ahead of KSU's Erin Hawe and Mercedes Germino, the 55th ranked golfer in the country.

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 35, as  Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) is tied for 13th with a 158 (79-79). Defending MAC Champion Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) is in a tie for 16th place with a 159 (79-80), while Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) notched a 165 (79-86) for 31st place.  Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) posted rounds of 79 and 88 for a total of 167 in a tie for 33rd place.

The third and final round of the 2012 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, April 29. Following competition MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportswomen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
