YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 27-29, at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind. The three-day, 54-hole event, will be played at 6,127 yards and to a par-72 for the nine MAC schools which sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan.

The tournament, which is hosted by Western Michigan University, will feature 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. each day. The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.

Last year, EMU placed four golfers in the top 30 of the individual standings and finished in second place in the final standings at Longaberger Golf Club, April 22-24, 2011. It marked the fifth consecutive year that the Eagles had finished in the top four of the team standings at the MAC Championship with a 54-hole score of 928 (316-301-311). Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) claimed the MAC individual championship by finishing at even-par 216 for the tournament.

Johnson became the first EMU player to win individual medalist honors since the program began prior to the 1996-97 campaign. Johnson finished seven strokes ahead of the rest of the field, and turned in scores of 72-73-71 in the championships. The previous best individual finish by an EMU golfer was a third-place effort by Catherine Fortin (2007), Stephany Fleet (2009) and Robyn Scott (2010).

Kent State remained the only school that has won the conference's women's golf title with a 12-stroke victory over EMU (928) while Ball State (939) finished in third place. Akron and Western Michigan finished tied for fourth with a 943, as Toledo (956), Ohio (960), Northern Illinois (999) and Bowling Green (1,006) rounded out the team scores.

The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 51 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Eastern Michigan (77), Akron (120), Toledo (144), Western Michigan (149), Ball State (154), Ohio (185), Bowling Green (183) and Northern Illinois (225).

The Eagles' five runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship are tied with Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005) for the most of any team in the league. Western Michigan (2004), Toledo (2006) and Ball State (2010) as the only other teams to record a second place finish in the history of the tournament.

The winner of the 2012 MAC Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA regional round May 10-12. Each of the three regional sites (Penn State at PSU Blue Course, Ohio State at OSU Scarlet Course, and Colorado at Colorado Nationals Golf Club) will host 24 teams, with the top eight teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club's in Nashville, Tenn.
