EMU will look to capture its 30th MAC title in program history

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will look to capture its 30th conference title in program history when the Eagles head to the 2012 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, March 1-3, in Oxford, Ohio.

The Eagles' 29 MAC titles is already conference record as is the programs 17 consecutive titles from 1980-96. The Green and White's MAC dominance at the conference championships began with its first title captured during the 1977-78 season. That year, the Green and White scored 348 points en route to the victory. Under Head Coach Peter Linn's guidance, the Eagles have secured 21 titles, with 10 consecutive crowns from 1988-1996. EMU has also taken 10 of the last 12 championships.

EMU will also head into the conference championships this weekend riding a 60-consecutive MAC dual meet winning streak. The Eagles clinched number 60, Feb. 4, in a 176.5-123.5 road victory over Miami University. The remarkable feat extends back to the 1997-98 campaign, as the Eagles have not lost a MAC contest since falling to Toledo that season, 113-130. Since that setback, the Green and White has not only won 60-consecutive MAC meets, but it has earned seven MAC Swimmer of Year Awards, produced 90 individual MAC Champions, turned out 34 different All-MAC athletes and captured 10 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Eagles enter the weekend at an even 4-3 record and a 1-0 mark in MAC meets with a number of athletes currently owning individual top-five times in the conference.

Freshman Brian Moore currently owns the fourth-fastest time in the 200 freestyle event with his 1:40.23 effort at the EMU Invitational on Dec. 3.

In the 500 free, Franco Petrone is second in the league. His time of 4:34.25 is second only to that of Missouri State's Caleb Schuermann who recorded a 4:34.08 race at the Incarnate Word Invite, Dec. 17.

Jacob Hanson leads the MAC in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. He sits atop the 100 distance thanks to a 48.79 effort at the EMU Invite, and leads the 200 with his 1:46.23 performance. Hanson also owns the fastest time in the 200 and 400 individual medleys with respective times of 1:50.42 and 3:56.38. Michael Swain is second in the 200 distance (1:50.59) and fifth in the 400 (4:03.38).

In the 100 breaststroke, a pair of Eagles rank in the top-five. Swain sits in second with a time of 57.42, while Troy Esentan is fourth with his 57.73 effort. The duo also tops the 200 breaststroke event, with Esentan ranking first (2:03.11) and Swain in second (2:03.74). Mike Fisher has the fifth-fastest time in that event after a 2:05.86 performance at Miami on Feb. 4.
