Eagles tally 236 points in first day of MAC Swimming and Diving Championships
Day One Results.
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — After the first day of action at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving squad leads all teams with 236 points in first place.
Southern Illinois follows in second place with 216 points, while Buffalo is in third with 171 points, followed by Miami in fourth (154), Missouri State in fifth (149) and Ball State in sixth (72). The University of Evansville rounds out the field with 26 points in seventh.
Three Eagles earned first place finishes in the finals session, with Franco Petrone, Jacob Hanson and Jeffrey Craig each taking home titles this evening.
Petrone was champion in the 500 freestyle thanks to his NCAA Division I-B consideration time of 4:24.34, narrowly edging out Missouri State's Cal Schuermann's second place finish of 4:24:94. Petrone's performance represented the fastest time at the MAC Championships since 2007 and the first title in the event for an Eagles swimmer since Dan Kish won the 500 free during the 2009 championships.
Brian Moore placed sixth in that event for the Green and White, racing to a 4:29.20 finish, while Matt Zavislak and Sean Tento rounded out top-10 scoring for the Eagles, placing eighth and 10th, respectively.
Jacob Hanson, who broke his own MAC championship time from 2011 in the 200 individual medley with a 1:46.82 in this afternoon's preliminary session, raced to a 1:45.38, first place finish in the finals for his third consecutive title in the event. His effort not only sets a new MAC Championship record, but it also breaks the conference record time of 1:47.65 in that respective event, previously set in 1999 by Miami's Kevin Northrup.
Michael Swain and Troy Esentan contributed valuable points in the 200 IM as well. Swain completed the distance in 1:49.22 for a fourth place finish, while Esentan took fifth after touching the wall at 1:49.40.
Craig earned his second title in three seasons on the one meter boards. Craig placed first after recording a six-dive total of 365.20 to defeat 2011 champion, Miami's Jimmy Beres, who tallied 352.35 points in the event.
A pair of Eagles scored points in the 50 freestyle finals this evening. Gus Everson was the top finisher for EMU in 13th place (20.64), while Oded Ivry secured a 14th place finish (20.74) for his squad.
In the evening's closing 400 medley relay event, Hanson, Esentan, Michael Kinross and Everson combined for a second place, 3:15.11 finish.
