EMU puts three in double figures but drops second straight
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fought hard, but eventually fell to the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday, 61-54, Nov. 18, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles held just one lead in the game after opening with the first bucket.
The Eagles had three in double-figures for scoring with Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) leading the way with 15 points. Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Bolingbrook-Providence) posted 11 points, while Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) added 10 of her own. On the boards, Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) posted nine rebounds. As a team, the Eagles shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the floor and 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc.
Shareta Brown led all scorers with 34 points, shooting 13-of-21 (61.9 percent). As a team Detroit shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor en route to their 61-54 win.
Eastern opened the scoring on an India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) jumper, but could not retain its lead, falling behind after the Titans knocked down a three-ball to take a 3-2 edge just 34 seconds into the game. Detroit continued to build its lead, opening the game with a 14-4 run after the initial Hairston bucket.
The Eagles fought back to within two, 30-28, when they opened a 16-5 run over five minutes of play, but Detroit was able to extend its halftime lead to five, 35-30.
The Titans opened the second half on an 8-2 run, stretching their lead to 11, 43-32. The Eagles responded with an 11-2 run to bring the game within two, 45-43, with 8:58 remaining. Detroit's offense was too strong down the stretch, outscoring EMU, 16-11, for the final 61-54 tally.
The Eagles continue their 2012-13 campaign with a non-conference tilt Friday, Nov. 23, when they play host to Boston University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
