YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With a top-four seed in the Mid-American Conference already at hand, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team looks to earn a share of the MAC West Division title Thursday afternoon, Oct. 25, in the final game of the 2012 regular season against the Western Michigan Broncos. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
MORE TO PLAY FOR IN SEASON FINALE: After missing the postseason just a season ago, the Eagles (10-6-1; 7-3-0 MAC) secured home-field advantage with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win Sunday, Oct. 21, against Akron University. A win against WMU (5-7-4; 1-4-4 MAC) combined with a Central Michigan (12-5-1; 8-2-0 MAC) loss at Bowling Green would give the Eagles a share of their first West Division crown.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: The Green and White will have a good chance of clinching its first eight-win conference campaign since the 2003 squad finished with an 8-2-2 MAC ledger when it hosts the Broncos Thursday. Western Michigan has scratched out just one conference win this season, despite only losing four-of-10 matches outright.
The all-time series between the Eagles and Broncos has been a tight one, with each side winning eight, losing eight, and tying four times. Last season, WMU topped EMU, 1-0, in Kalamazoo.
MORE TO COME FROM SCICLUNA: The Eagles enter Thursday's game in third place in the MAC and can finish no lower than fourth place. This means EMU is guaranteed to host a MAC Quarterfinal game Sunday, Oct. 28, with the time and opponent TBA.
McCABE SOUND IN FIRST CAREER STARTS: Filling in for an injured Jenna O'Dell, freshman goalkeeer Megan McCabe picked up right where her teammate left off with a 2-0 weekend on the road at Buffalo and Akron. The undefeated performances included a shutout against the Bulls and a grand total of just one goal allowed on 10 shots for a .900 save percentage.
EMU GOALIES LOCK THE CAGE: Eastern Michigan's 1-0 blanking of Buffalo Friday, Oct. 19, was the squad's sixth of the season and tied the 2009 team's mark for regular-season shutouts. That season, EMU went on to shutout Kent State in the MAC Quarterfinal, 3-0, Nov. 1.
Redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell is responsible for five of Eastern Michigan's shutouts, while freshman Megan McCabe notched her first-career zero-goal outing against Buffalo, Oct. 19.
ALL OR NOTHING ON THE ROAD: With two road wins at Buffalo and Akron, the Eagles completed their second weekend sweep away from Ypsilanti this season. EMU completed the 2012 MAC campaign with a 4-2 record in road contests with a pair of 2-0 showings and one disappointing 0-2 weekend. The Green and White is 5-4 overall in road matches this season.
CUTAIA GETS 20TH POINT OF 2012: Junior midfielder and co-captain Cara Cutaia achieved yet another milestone Sunday, Oct. 21, against Akron, as her three-point outing gave her 20 on the season. Cutaia leads the team in overall offense with six goals and eight assists and becomes the first EMU player to reach the 20-point plateau since Paige Sheridan notched 20 in 2010.
THE BEST OF WHAT'S AROUND: With one game remaining in the regular season, the Eagles have racked-up 88 points for one of the top totals in the MAC and the best mark for an EMU squad since the 2008 team turned an 111-point effort.
EMU IN POSTSEASON PLAY: Since playing their first MAC Tournament game in 1997, the Eagles are 8-12 all-time with one championship in 1999. EMU has qualified for the postseason event in all but two seasons (2006, 2011).
EAGLES TRAMPLE BULLS TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT: The Eagles clinched a spot in the 2012 MAC tournament with a 1-0 triumph over the Buffalo Friday, Oct. 19. Sophomore Bianca Rossi scored the deciding goal in the 75th minute and Megan McCabe recorded her first-career victory and shutout.
Rossi's goal was her seventh of the season and fourth game-winning tally of 2012. Freshman Megan Trapp earned her third point of the season when her crossing attempt deflected off the hands of the Buffalo goalkeeper and found Rossi.
DZKI, CUTAIA PROVIDE HEROICS IN AKRON: Trailing, 1-0, with six minutes to play in regulation, EMU roared back to tie the game and win it in double overtime, 2-1, on the road against Akron Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21. Sophomore Emily Dzik scored the game-winner off a corner kick in the 106th minute and clinched home-field advantage in the quarterfinal game of the MAC Tournament.
The game remained scoreless until the 73rd minute, when Akron netted the go-ahead marker for the Zips. Then with just over six minutes left in regulation, junior Cara Cutaia scored the equalizer to send the game into overtime.
In extra time, Cutaia perfectly executed a corner kick, which Dzik headed into the goal to send a jubilant Eagles' squad streaming onto the field in celebration.
