Complete Release (.pdf)
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University soccer team concludes its six-game road trip with a Sunday, Sept. 11 matchup against Western Kentucky University at 1 p.m in Bowling Green, Ky. The Eagles (0-4-1) look to snap a four-match losing skid against the Hilltoppers (3-2-0) and grace the win column for the first time this season.
HEADING SOUTH: The Eagles and Hilltoppers will be meeting for the first time when they clash Sunday in Bowling Green. The match will provide one final tune-up before returning home for three of the next five games.
Eastern Michigan needs to solve its offensive struggles against a WKU defense which has allowed only six goals in five games. Stephanie Clarke is still in search of her first goal of the season despite leading the team in shots on goal with nine. Likewise, none of Chelsea Detrick's 17 shots (seven on goal) have found the back of the net so far in 2011.
On the other end of the field, the EMU defense comes off a strong showing against Oakland and will try to continue that solid play Sunday. Goalkeeper Maggie Manville, who now has three games under her belt this season, goes for her first win.
The Hilltoppers come into Sunday's game with Mallory Outerbridge and Leslie Chinn pacing the offense with two goals apiece through five games. Goalkeeper Libby Stout comes into the game with a goals against average of 1.00 with a shutout.
STYMIED: A pair of well-played games last weekend turned up a double dose of disappointment as the Eagles lost decisions to Butler University Friday, Sept. 2, and Oakland University, Sept. 4.
The Bulldogs bested the Eagles, 2-1, on a last-minute goal after EMU tied the score on an Emily Dzik goal in the 74th minute.
Then, the Grizzlies secured a 1-0 win with the lone goal scored on a penalty shot in the 31st minute. EMU had a chance to knot the score at a goal apiece a few minutes later with a penalty shot of its own, but Oakland's goalkeeper came up with a save to keep the Eagles off the board.
Stephanie Clarke and Cara Cutaia were dangerous around the Oakland goal but were ultimately unable to sneak a shot into the Grizzlies' net. The Eagles put six shots on goal to Oakland's four. Eastern Michigan's defense was solid against a normally potent Grizzlies offense.
DZIK DOES IT: Freshman defender Emily Dzik notched her first-career goal Friday evening against Butler. Dzik fired a shot, which was initially deflected by Bulldogs goalkeeper Natalie Galovska, but not enough to prevent the ball from reaching the back of the net.
The native of Troy, Mich. has three points on the season which includes an assist in a 2-2 tie at the University of Pittsburgh, Aug. 19.
EXPLAIN THAT: The Green and White currently sit third in the Mid-American Conference in total shots with 74 (14.8 per game)–four behind Western Michigan University which has 79. Oddly enough, this has not translated into goals as the Eagles have tallied just four (0.80 per game) in five games–good for eighth in the MAC.
Individually, Chelsea Detrick (17; 3.4 per game) and Stephanie Clarke (13; 2.6 per game) rank third and eighth, respectively, in total shots yet neither has registered a goal thus far.
SLOWLY BUT SURELY: It has been nearly a month since the Eagles last played a game in front of a home crowd at Scicluna Field, but the Green and White will do just that Friday, Sept. 16, when they play host to Illinois State University. The game will mark the final non-conference contest of the season.
The Eagles' conference home slate includes dates with Kent State, Sept. 30, Buffalo, Oct. 2, Miami, Oct. 9, Ball State, Oct. 21, Toledo, Oct. 23, and Central Michigan, Oct. 27.
The Eagles finished 6-2-3 in MAC play in 2010 which included an impressive 6-0-1 start to the conference slate.
FROM THE STAT SHEET: All 21 members of the EMU squad have seen action in at least two games this season.
The Eagles have attempted 17 corner kicks so far with Stephanie Clarke attempting 14 and Cara Cutaia taking three.
Opponents have committed 54 fouls against EMU, while the Eagles have only fouled 35 times.
THIS IS OUR HOUSE: Last season, the Eagles finished with a home record of 3-1-3 including victories against Akron (4-1), Sept. 26, Bowling Green (6-4), Oct. 1 and Northern Illinois (3-1), Oct. 15.
OUTSIDE THE FAMILY: Including the first three games of 2011, the Eagles carry a 19-23-11 record against non-conference foes since the 2005 season. EMU's best mark was 5-2-2 in 2008, when the team finished 13-5-5 overall.
ON THE RECORD: Chelsea Detrick currently sits eighth all-time on the EMU scoring list with 45 points, four shy of tying former Eagle stars Brandy Jones (1997-2001) and Courtney Sindelar (1999-2002). Jessica Hupe (2000-04) is the all-time leading point-getter with 117.
The native of Grosse Pointe, Mich. is also just a pair of goals away from tying Ashley Rodrigues (21) for fourth all-time in goals with 19. Hupe tallied 49 goals to top the career goals list as well.
